Missing Mittens (MathStart 1)

Odd and Even
The story: Everyone is missing a mitten which is very odd. How can they keep warm if they don't have even mitten pairs?Math wise, the book does a pretty good job in the illustrations showing the odd and even groupings as well as using the word odd throughout the book to make it clear that not having a pair is odd. I think its a successful book especially if you use the parent/teacher info provided in the back and then do some practice of matching mitten pairs, counting if sets are off or even, etc. Some kids only learn through stories, pictures, and tactile examples.... this book provides the story to do all that. I would teach sets and basic counting before doing this material so kids have the foundation to understand it.

Love this Book!
As a former teacher, parent & homeschool mom, I can't recommend this book enough! It is cute, with fun illustrations. It rhymes and flows well, making it easy to read aloud. As a children's story, it is funny & entertaining. And best of all, it helps teach the math concept of odd vs. even numbers in a very-easy-to-understand way, including helpful diagrams. I just bought 2 more copies . . one to replace my family's book, because we have literally worn it out & another for my nephew's birthday. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone buying for a preschooler!!

Great Introduction to Odds and Evens
My five-year-old son loves this entire series and thoroughly enjoyed Missing Mittens. As did I, for that matter. We are living in a warm climate, so my son was immediately drawn to the snowy setting. He enjoyed the story and definitely grasped the odds and evens concept as we were reading through the book. I read a lot of books aloud to my son--both fiction and nonfiction and ranging from picture books to chapter books such as Tales of My Father's Dragon. While some reviewers seemed to find this story lacking, my son and I both enjoyed it. I have a huge math and numbers fan in my son and I love how this book provides him with an introduction to so many concepts that interest him. I used to teach and definitely think this would be great in the classroom as well. This is a great series!

They are simply fantastic! Mr
We have most of the MathStart books. They are simply fantastic! Mr. Murphy has a knack for simplifying the concept for little kids and the illustrations are very striking. We read a new one every week and read it once a day (an idea borrowed from a friend). The books also have some activities that go with the concept.

This book has taught both of my boys of even and odd numbers.
My local library doesn't have this anymore so I bought it for my younger one. It worked its magic, again!
