No, the click into place and are held quite securely. I also have a travel scrabble set that uses magnets and find this one better. The magnet one is small, and fits in your pocket so is very good in some situations, but the tiles are a bit larger than the squares, and finger nails aren't so easy to get under them. The click fit means it's always tidy, has never come adrift due to spills or knocks and it simply says put if you need to close it up for a while. My third set is the traditional table top one with nothing to hold the tiles in place, and I MUCH prefer this set over my others. Hope this helps.
