Can the unit be powered via a computer's USB port? I see the input 5v-12v but does it need more than the 900 mA that a USB 3.0 port would provide?

This will not step down the video to composite. This keeps the 1080 signal and pushes it down SDI. I turn it back into HDMI on the other end for long range monitors. Note that this will only push through about 100ft of standard SDI before signal loss. They are low power.
