While this book is directed to an American audience and the section on buying a sextant is of more use to them perhaps, than to a UK reader,it is still an exellent introduction to the subject.The writer sees the sextant as a 'tool'---- one which is hedged about with unneccesary mystique that ought to be quickly dispelled. The adjustment and use of the sextant is treated in a very practical way, with tips on how to get a good sight following the adjustment of the instrument to reduce errors. The illustrations to enable the adjustments to be made are clear, as are the instructions for putting it right.You will still need another book on the business of calculating your results, but this one will give very realistic advice on the planning ,timing, and taking of the sight.The section on the history of the development of the modern sextant, coupled with the very readable text, prevents this being a dry manual and is written from a very personal perspective based on experience.

Everything is in this book relative to the use of a sextant! Recommended!

Easy to understand

Really good book on the history of the sextant , it's construction, use and maintenance. Loads of information on adjusting and explains different methods of finding and correcting sextant errors. It's really an in depth "user manual" that covers all makes and types of sextant, both vintage and modern. Informative.

Regardless of your skill with these instruments, this book takes you through every stage of instrument, how and where to buy, adjustments and use both sun, moon, star and shore. Its a fascinating volume. Buy it if your interested in the marine sextant.

Good package no damage , still have to read in detail but will definitely help to finish my thesis on the matter.

Bruce Bauer’s “The Sextant Handbook” starts with explaining how the sextant came to be and how it solves the problems with earlier instruments. His style is conversational, which makes it easy for the reader to pick up technical terms and understand more and more complex concepts.Once he establishes the basics, he goes straight into how the instrument works, what is important about each part, and how to keep the instrument working at its best.I bought the book to learn about using a sextant. I’ve gotten so much more than that out of it. I highly recommend it.

aber trotzdem mal ein gutes empfehlenswertes Buch.Das perfekte Buch gibt es ja nun mal nicht.Bin voll zufrieden damit.
