Q: Can I take the front off to color in between the hours to help school kids manage time?

Quite possibly. There are 6 small screws on the back that attach the back to the front. Unscrewed it possible that the clock face would be exposed sufficiently for you to mark it. If you order the clock and unscrewing it does not expose the clock face can’t you return it?

Q: can you remove the second hand?

Second hand is easy to get to. I was able to get to it to bend it to keep it from stopping the clock.. As for removing it I didn't try and I don't know if it comes off easily.

Q: Does this clock have a battery cover?

i don't thinks o but the batter i s hidden behind the clock and the battery is in there very well hidden - will tell you that it is a cheap plastic clock - the first one came broken, the second one was fine - it was for the bathroom so i don't care how long it will last - it's in the appropriate place for its quality (ha ha)

Q: Will this clock retain its accuracy if mounted horizontally?

So far it has. I've only had it on the wall for about a week or so.
