Not for LiFePO4 batteries, only 3.7 volt Li-ion. A fast charger!
The information says for LiFePO4 batteries, but DO NOT try it, at least according to the manual. It only has a 4.2 volt output for Li-ion batteries. LiFePO4 require 3.65 charging voltage. It's possible it would work in the CC mode, but the termination will be incorrect and would likely trip the battery protection circuit.Okay, the vendor has been in contact with me and agreed to remove the LiFEPO4 claim from the description and they have done so. I'm adding a star for that. I have also completed some rather thorough testing of the charger when charging a single Li-ion (cobalt or manganese) 800-850 mAh batteries from DoublePow. The battery vendor rates their battery at 3150 mWh, which divided by 3.7 gives me the mAh rating. Therefore, the standard accepted charging regimen would charging between 425 and 850 ma to the termination voltage, and then constant voltage to a current of about 25-30 mA, followed by shutoff. The EBL charger uses a different algorithm for charging, but it seems to work okay. With a single battery connected, that charger begins charging at a constant current of about 950 mA, which is higher than the 1C for this battery, but not by too much. As such, is a rapid charge mode of battery chargers, and most Li-ion batteries will tolerate this, with some potential for shortening the battery life. Additionally, the charger shuts off for 250-300 ms in each 2.5 second period, reducing the average current to the 1C range. The charger appears to sample the battery open circuit terminal voltage in this interval. The second, or constant voltage phase of charging is not really a constant voltage phase. Once the battery terminal open circuit voltage gets to around 4.l volts, the current begins to taper off, but the charger does not use the current measurement as the termination condition, instead relying on the measured open circuit battery voltage to determine the termination point. When the battery reaches 4.21 volts, the charger stops charging. At this point the measured current out of the charger was still over 200 mA. This results in slightly less than a full charge, as the battery did not get the full constant voltage charging phase. The termination phase only takes 5 to 10 minutes when the usual CV phase lasts from 30 minutes to a couple of hours, depending on how fast the CC phase was. The measured difference in battery capacity was around 100 mWh when compared to a complete charge using the standard algorithm. If you really want a more complete charge, you can remove the battery and then reinsert it. At that point the charge starts again, this time with a current of around 100 mA. It charges for a couple of minutes and then stops. This resulted in a difference of only 20 mWh from the standard algorithm.All-in-all, once the Li-FePO4 claim was removed (which is what I originally bought it for), this is a good charger for Li-ion 3.7 volt batteries. The vendor did offer to refund my money for the inconvenience, but Amazon had already done so. I appreciate the customer support via email. I have no conclusion about the battery longevity, as that takes 6 months to a year of constant cycling to figure out. I also did not test charging NiMH batteries.
