The cam doesn't have sharp teeth like most, but does have rounded ridges to grab the rope. I wouldn't be concerned about it damaging a rope sheath if you're using it as intended (not as a fall assessor).

Q: Would this work on a lineman’s rope for like say putting up tree stands?
