Works well and is easy to use
I wish this was available 20 years ago. It would have saved me untold money when we redid landscaping, and I paid the local Invisible Fence franchise $300+ each time they came out to locate and fix a fence break. Some time ago I tried using an electronic component and an AM radio as instructed by the Internet but was never able to get this arrangement to work. This unit is easy to set up and easy to use. As an added bonus, the instructions are both clear and concise (a nice change of pace). I bought it to locate a break I created last week while replacing fence posts. I had a general idea of where the break was and located it to within a foot in less than five minutes.I would like to think that anyone who can read and follow simple instructions can be successful locating breaks with this unit and save themselves the trouble and expense of paying a service to do it for them.

one break and this pays for itself
clear instructions, and worked perfectly. i was tired of paying the invisible fence guy to find / repair the break in the system. with this i walked to the exact spot where the break was. dug down, repaired the wire, covered things back up and my dog's were once again trapped in the 2 acre paradise where they live. one break and this pays for itself.

Perfect Tool for Detecting Breaks
Have an acre which we had an invisible fence (Invisible Fence brand) installed around the entire perimeter of the property. We did some landcaping and broke the line in 3 spots fairly far apart from each other. 1 spot was obvious, the other 2 were not. The locator found the breaks easily and I was able to make all the repairs quickly (under an hour) and the fence was working like new again. Invisible Fence brand uses 14 gauge wire, so I bought extra 14 gauge wire as I didn't want to splice with the 20 gauge wire that was included in this kit. The key points are pour a few gallons of water on the stakes to get a good ground and start detecting from near your controller and fix breaks as you discover them going around your yard. It's all very easy and you'll be fixing your fence like a pro in no time.

It works
It takes a while to set up, the two earth ground stakes being the most work, but in the end it found the break in our invisible fence.

My hopes for the tool were met. My expectations were exceeded.
We have an invisible fence brand dog fence surrounding about 1.25 acres of a 2 acre property. The wire depth is quite shallow and we've managed to cut it numerous times. In the past I've spent hours of frustration and dug more trenches than I care to admit finding and fixing breaks. On those rare occasions I couldn't find / fix the break, a single service call from invisible fence costs more than this product. This time I managed to cut the wire while aerating the yard. I had a rough idea of the likely area of the cut, but it was still a pretty big area. Using my prior methods I shuddered to think how long and how much digging it would take to find and fix. After doing a little research, I ordered this product. I was hopeful but also a little skeptical given quality commercial wire locators cost much, much more.I'm a "tool guy" and a fairly competent DIY handyman, but none of those skills were needed to read the directions and set up the break finder. Transfer the wires from your fence to the test unit transmitter, connect two ground wires and run them to in ground stakes (provided in the kit), plug it in and you're 99% done. For the last 1% install two AAA batteries (not included) into the receiver (which just so happens to look like the offspring of a golf club and a metal detector). Turn receiver on and commence break finding.Despite having an approximate idea of where the break was, I wanted to run the tool through its paces and really see how it worked. I started at the invisible fence transmitter location and began to walk the fence line using the tool the way the directions described. In less than a minute I had the hang of it and followed the receiver signal along the wire until the break. The tone and lights changed on the receiver exactly as the directions said they would. I spent a couple more minutes walking back and forth over the break area to really hone in. After digging a small hole I found I was within a foot of the break, which happened to be around 125 yards away from the transmitter. 5 minutes later I had it fixed and the hole refilled. That's an exponential improvement over my prior "dig and pray" methodology.Summary: I followed the directions. The tool did exactly what the directions said it would. I found and fixed a break with a high degree of precision over 100 yards away from the starting point. My hopes for the tool were met. My expectations were exceeded. I have confidence it will perform just as well the next time there's a break. And I guarantee there will be a next time.

Invisible Fence Approved
Found 3 line breaks after my yard was aerated.Pretty simple to use and diagnose.Would suggest when you get to a point where the tone gets quieter and quieter you dig before it turns silent. Find the line and pull. It will slide towards you if there is a break. Pull it all the way out of the ground and then lay it on top of the ground to determine where to dig for the other side. Touch the two wires together with the wand in tho on position nearby. You will hear an audible loud beeping when the connection points touch each other without even setting the wand on the line. Repeat this until the entire fence line is in a loud beeping mode. The wiring they provide is less thick than the line from Invisible Fence but it still works fine. The two sections of fix(Different issue about the lack of depth from Invisible Fence to dig the line.)
