This unit is not , the other e Bushnell are though.

Q: Do these radios require ham license??

A license is not required to operate the radio.

Q: Do these actually reach up to 42 miles ? I need at least 30 miles

Like all walkies, they will not reach any where near the advertised range unless you're on a clear 42 mile body of water with nothing interfering & since I've had no way to test that out, who knows how far they can actually reach. I've used them at the lake & from our campsite to the entrance of the park was only about a mile or 2 & we lost contact after 1 got passed the gate. Trees, buildings, etc. will not allow them to reach far at all. This isn't a bushnell issue though, I've had this issue with every brand. It's just how it is.
