An excellent all-in-one device for your home or office.
I've been using my Brother MFC-7340 Flatbed Laser Multi-Function Center for over a year now and I really love it! Before I purchased this Brother MFC-7940, I previously had an inkjet printer, but got tired of constantly paying so much for new ink (which would run out rather quickly). However, that's not a problem with laser printers -- even with the starter toner cartridge this printer comes with, you still get 1,000 pages of printing, which is pretty significant. The MFC-7340 produces very high-quality printed pages, which looks professional -- with no smearing or smudges. It also prints pretty fast, as one would expect with a laser printer. I also like the fact that the MFC-7340 has a manual duplex printing option, which walks you through the steps of printing on both sides. This can save paper, and the software makes it relatively easy to do, including how to orient the sheets for reverse side printing. I've not had any real problems with paper jams, and the device is pretty easy to use overall. The scanner also does a great job, and you can scan at pretty high resolutions using either the flatbed or the ADF (automatic document feeder) above it. One thing I particularly like about the multi-function center is that if you have a stack of pages you'd like to scan - you can load them into the ADF, press "scan" and walk away. The machine will scan the entire stack, and send the scans to the software included with the printer. Also, you can use the MFC-7340 to make simple copies - without even needing the computer to be on. It works like a regular copier in that sense, so you can load documents in the ADF or place them on the flatbed scanner, press "copy" then "start" and you're done. You can also adjust the contrast, size and quality of the copies you wish to make. The fax also does a pretty good job, and like the copier - doesn't require the computer to be on. However, you do have the option of sending incoming faxes directly to your computer - if you want to save on paper. Alternatively, you can send faxes via your computer as well. The software include's Brother's Control Center, which is pretty handy - and provides a panoply of scanning, copying and PC-fax options. I also found very useful the included ScanSoft PaperPort 11 -- which offers a lot more scanning options, and the ability to convert documents to PDFs. You can also use PaperPort11 to merge PDFs and rearrange them pretty much anyway you like. The PaperPort software can be a little clunky to use at times, but once you get over the learning curve, it's actually quite useful.Overall I have to give the Brother MFC-7340 Flatbed Laser Multi-Function Center an excellent review. Prior to purchasing this product, my experience with all-in-one printers is that they do a lot of things somewhat adequately, though often lacking in some manner or another. The Brother MFC-7340 really impressed me because it does a lot of things, and does them very well. The only drawback I can think of is if you want color printing (it prints only in black and white). The manual could have been a bit shorter, though it was still readable and often provided useful information. The size of the device itself is not too much larger than a comparable device in its category, and actually fairly small compared to some of the larger laser all-in-ones I've seen. It could easily fit in any home office or business with room to spare. In general, the MFC-7340 has exceeded my expectations and I've not experienced any issues or problems with it. It's an excellent product, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who looking for a nice little device that does a great job with copies, prints, faxes and scans.

purchased the mfc-7340 in 2011, it still produces high quality printouts
Like some other reviewers have already noted, this is a very good quality printer that lasts many, many years. I bought my mfc-7340 from amazon in June 2011, and i still use it even today (July 2024) to print out files from my computer and to make copies. TBH, copy quality has deteriorated a little bit, but (a) the lower quality usually isn't noticeable and (b) this is probably due to how long i've had this printer and/or how much or little i've used it (in the past few years, i only use it once in a blue moon, but when i have used it, it worked very well (easy to use, nice printouts)). ALso, I haven't done anything special to maintain it, i just buy new toner cartridges when it runs out of ink. I have to say that I've been very, very happy with the performance of the mfc-7340.

Excellent Buy
I bought this machine after too many awful inkets that ate up ink like it was candy. I realized that the vast majority of the printing I do can be in B&W, and the few that need to be color, I can fire up the inkjet.I screwed up the setup because I never saw that there was a separate setup disk for users with Windows 7, so I guess that was own fault. It was a pain to fix it, but it all worked out in the end. It worked flawlessly once I got everything in place. If you aren't like me, and do it correctly the first time, it's a 10 minute or less ordeal. The print quality is excellent. I do recommend paper intended for use in a laser printer however. Another problem with the inkjet Lexmark I have was the ADF. It was awful, and never worked. The ADF on this machine, on the other hand, works like a charm, which is an extremely important feature for a fax and copier to have. The only problem I have with the machine is not really the noise (because it does become silent after a few minutes after doing a job) but it honestly makes the lights flicker in that area of the house. You never know, it could be the electricity in the house!

A decent printer for the money
I looked at quite a few combo printers before purchasing this one. I just switched from an inkjet and will never go back...the ink always seems to dry up way too fast. Of course, I do seem to go a while between printing. I have owned the MFC 7340 now for about two plus months and I am very satisfied with it. It was delivered very fast and was relatively easy to set up. The one thing I wasn't real happy with was how I had to search through a boat load of information on the disk to find how to set up the scanner with my Mac...it could have been simplified with better headings on the disk. Otherwise I have been very happy with this purchase...it prints and scans fast and does a nice job.

Document Feeder consistently JAMS with less than 20 pages (well under the stated 35 page ability)
If the document/paper feeder feature is important to you, you should know that this document/paper feeder is weak and poorly constructed. It grabs multiple pages, consistently bends pages. If you have say 10 or more documents you will also need to hold pressure on the ends of the papers in the feeder so that the feeder can detect documents are present. Quite a pain. This is a brand new unit used less than 20 days. Brother rates feeder at 35 pages - I have yet to be able to feed 10 pages or more without issues with the feeder. It copies fine, scans fine, and prints fine - as long as you do not have large jobs that use the auto paper feeder.Bottom line, if you use document feeder - you will be frustrated with this product and I would not recommend it for your application.

Good product.
This product works pretty well even though it feels a little flimsy. The scanning works very well and is pretty fast but, lately, shows a streak. The fax machine works well. The printing is ok but not up to HP quality. The copies are too light. I see they have raised the price about $50 since I bought it. Despite these gripes, I am happy overall with the product. It has lasted pretty long.
