7- the ON/OFF knob is almost too deep to easily access (way too deep)
I bought an Essick evaporative cooler at Lowe's. While not the same model, Essick evaporative coolers seem to be awful. The model I bought was a smaller model, the WCM28. Among many complaints: 1- the cooler did not come with a cover, thus one has to remove the unit in the winter or custom make a cover. In the summer, one can not close the vents, so hot air can come in to the whole residence when the unit is not in use; 2- the location of the float valve is near the outside front edge of the unit...already the line has been broken by someone/something breaking the line; 3- the pump did not work initially...I had to use WD40 and work it with a screwdriver to get the pump to move; 4- the louvers are worthless and only out the top vent, and there are no louvers for the bottom, and the louvers are too close to the front grill to move (disgusting! also, about half of the louvers were out when I purchased the unit...no sense in replacing them!); 5- the pump plug is too deep (and possibly in in dangerous position) to access, especially when wet; 6- front of cooler squirts water from the sides of the front panel and from where a screw hole is in the center (very messy and wasteful of water); 7- the ON/OFF knob is almost too deep to easily access (way too deep); and 8- the unit is reasonably quiet on low, but it is the loudest cooler I remember at high speed...hard to be in the room with and impossible to sleep near. Generally, the WCM28 is poorly designed and not of very good quality. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND AN ESSICK EVAPORATIVE COOLER, as the vents, ON/OFF switch, location of the float valve, and no cover indicate they really don't care about the customer.

I have not had these bad issues
I have not had the problems others have had. I got mine at a home center several years ago. About $100 cheaper than price shown here today. I have not had any issues with the pump or motor. No paint peeling. I replace the pads every year, and it treats me well. I would like if it had louvers to direct the air up and down, but as it is, you can only direct it side to side. Also, it really won't cool the 600 sq ft this says. It only cools my living room, which is 300 sq ft.

Do Not Recommend
I bought this WCM28 elsewhere for a single 400 sq. ft. bedroom which it does not cool down well. As others have said the quality is low. The fan is too noisy to run while sleeping . It doesn't move much air (dual squirrel cage fan). Pad access is poor. The pads are an unusual size so I often need to cut from other sizes. The list goes on and on. Sorry I went with this one.
