Typical high quality LaCie drive
After many years of using different models of LaCie drives I believe they are well designed, good performing and long lasting. However as a Windows user I've never had any success using their configuration software, so directly configure these drives myself. As such I'm not sure I can recommend these to Windows users who don't know how to configure drives using Windows or 3rd party utilities. I've marked the drive down a point because of this.I always burn drives in before putting them into use to avoid infant-mortality failures. In this case they came with all SMART values indicating they were new drives with no errors. After exercising both drives for over 24hrs of a steady read/write load they still showed no errors, as healthy drives should. After almost two months of daily usage with backup software I've had no issues and no SMART drive errors for the two 8TB drives. The internal drive (Seagate ST8000DM004-2CX188) is well rated in general so these units should be relatively reliable long term. The enclosures run cool even under heavy load. Don't notice noise during use.To set the drives up this time I used disk partitioning software (in this case EaseUS Partition Master) taking the following configuration steps. It is possible to do these same things using Windows utilities, but not as simple as purpose-built utilities. • Delete all partitions as delivered (saving the factory files first) • Initialize to GPT disk (to support partitions larger than 2TB) • Create single new partition (NTFS at 7.28 TB) • Install a disk icon • Mount the disk and start using

The product is well made and performs
I have had at least a dozen different Lacie backup drives and my experience keeps taking by back to their next higher capacity and newer models (I now have 4 of these particular 8TB drives. They may not be the cheapest drives on the market, but they do what they are supposed to do. This drive is referred to as a desktop model, but I carry one of these everywhere I travel. I shoot a lot of photography all over the world and this is where I back up all my information at the end of everyday of shooting. To be candid, I had one of these drives fail back in 2008, when the maximum size one could buy was 1 TB in a portable version. That only took place after very extended use. I use these as backup storage for photography and business documents. In my experience it is never wise to backup to only one drive. Thus losing one long ago, simply keeps me backing up to more than one unit, as a safety precaution. I do not regret being conservative in my thinking; that is to say, backing up t more than one drive. Lacie offers a very inexpensive insurance recovery policy. The charge is just under $15.00 for a five year guarantee that they will repair and recover information from a failed drive, or provide the buyer with a new equivalent drive with the lost information copied to it. I have never had to use this insurance, but one would be foolish not to purchase it when buying new drives.

Very good with Linux!
I use Linux Mint 17.3, and this disk works perfectly with rsync and Clonezilla. The only mildly annoying thing was that the disk first shows 0 available space until you run a setup utility in under Windows, which I did to test it. The setup worked fine, and then the entire disk was available, formatted as NTFS. I then tested rsync, which worked perfectly with the original NTFS format. I then reformatted the disk as EXT4, as I'm using it with Linux, and it still works perfectly with rsync and Clonezilla. An interesting point is that it uses the same, exact power and data cables as Western Digital My Book drives. I have a 6TB My Book from WD that works with Linux, (unlike their current 8TB product, which I reviewed with one star as two different units both failed to work with rsync at all, even after I reformatted the disks as EXT4). I can use the same power and data cables with both disks, and they both work fine. LaCie also gives you a mini USB data cable as well as a standard USB. In addition, the LaCie power brick comes with swapable plugs which could help someone traveling outside North America.I can't speak to the endurance of this disk, since I've only had it a few days, but it's been running for about 3 full days backing up several TB with rsync and Clonezilla, so I must say so far so good. It's not the fastest disk around, but it certainly works well for backups.

Large capacity means there's more to lose!
My 8TB LaCie acted up a couple of nights ago. I've had it for about three years; I had partitioned it when I bought it so I could use 4TB as Time Machine and 4TB as video storage. When I connected it to my MacBook Pro the other night, the Time Machine partition didn't mount correctly. The Mac tried to repair it but failed, so it advised me to back up the contents and reformat. The Files partition also failed, but the Mac disk utility could repair that, so I could access my files as usual. But to prepare for the reformat, I had to move everything to other external drives, which was a huge, painful, time-intensive task. I'm still moving contents from the drive - and I expect it to work again after the reformat - but I'm planning to buy a couple of smaller drives (maybe two 4TB drives) to provide more security and reduce the pain if one of them fails in the future. I've had better luck with WD and Seagate....

Just Bought My Second One
I LOVE this hard drive. I bought my first one almost two years ago. I have a mac, but use it to watch media on my TV, so I reformatted it for windows, and access/edit my files through a program called "NTFS for Mac OSX." After filling up all 8TB on my first one, I decided to buy a second one and so far have no complaints. It looks sleek next to my TV and i'm surprised that after almost two years, it's still current -- which is rare for a hard drive. My only complaint would be that after two years, the LED indicator has faded. I didn't even notice until I bought the second one and have them side by side. After some research, I don't think that the faded LED is an indicator that the hard drive is dying, but it would have been nice if it stayed as bright as a new one a little longer.

Easy install on Mac
Just installed the drive today, took about 2 to 3 minuted on my Mac. It comes with software that when you launch let’s you format to HTFS for Mac, which I did, then deleted all the LaCie software as I don’t need or want it.The box itself is smaller than I thought it would be and is reasonably quiet in operation and I’m happy to keep it next to my iMac. Just be aware that the supplied usb cable is only about 50cm, so if you do want it to be further away, you’ll need an extra cable. It looks nice enough to be on my desk. I’m not sure if it’s stackable with more drives on top, which would be good as I’ll be needing another two at some point.I’ve transferred 1.2 TB to it immediately with around 4,000 files and it took 90 minutes via USB 3 directly plugged into my Mac.So overall I’m happy enough with the drive and will update if it malfunctions.

Stylish and solid + easy set-up [Mac]
GENERAL:I've bought three of these - two were Amazon Warehouse deals. [I'm still amazed that I can even think I need 24Tb of additional storage!]These things look gorgeous and have a really solid feel to them. The power units are interchangeable with my existing Seagate units. No problems so far and I hope the discs will prove reliable.SET-UP:I have a Mac and the front-end utility did make initial install / format / set-up very easy. However the LaCie software that continues to fire up when I mount the disc seems a bit fussy and unnecessary – I think I'll probably disable it if I can.WARRANTY:They say these come with a '2-year' warranty but when I registered mine online the reported expiry dates seemed a bit random. They didn't tie up with either purchase or registration dates. Maybe this was to do with them being Warehouse deals and therefore recognised by the system as not new [warranties expire at 18 and 21 months respectively]. Amazon weren't able to help much with this but they did give me a further discount. The third one, bought new, has a 25-month warranty validity.

Nice, but over-designed
I got this for my Plex DVR setup and the HDD is nice if a bit slow.My main problem is with the really bright flashing indicator. I have it sitting on my desk in the office and its very distracting. I can't imagine having it on display in the living-room where I originally thought it might be. A bit of electrical tape over the indicator fixed the issue...The problem with it is that it blinks on any activity, enough to induce epileptic fits... If it just stayed on or blinked a lot slower it wouldn't be an issue.

Only lasts a year
Started to give disc errors after a year. Could mend using check-disc but then after 18 months became impossible to use. I have had several LaCie products and they have all failed within a couple of years or so. So this is an endemic problem. Ordinary office environment with air conditioning in summer. Seagate, Toshiba, WD all ok. Eventually fail but take more than 5 years. LaCie fails much quicker compared to other external drives. My lesson is that even the new LaCies fail quickly. So of me I will not be buying LaCie again.

Recommended for Mac. Can’t say about Windows.
Nice looking piece of kit. Does the job wonderfully. It’s working very nicely with my iMac and MacBook Pro. Whether external storage will work with Apple/Mac products is always a bit of a worry but this LaCie 8gb drive works no problem. This is the 3rd LaCie that I’m utilising and everything works no bother (hope that’s not “famous last words”). You could use it as a portable device but it’s not meant for that as it’s bigger and designed for desk top.
