This is a great Answering Machine
This unit replaced my 15 year old At&T Answering Machine that was ruined by an electrical power surge.Ordering was easy and shipping was fast ... I received the unit within 3 days after ordering using the Free Shipping Option. The "1740" was easy to connect and set-up. This unit has a pre-programmed answering voice which I am using. You can, however, record your own personal message. Incoming call indicator is nice and message playback is very clear.I also like the "number of rings" option that you can select. My previous machine rang only 4 rings before answering.I have this new machine set for 6 rings, allowing me to get to the phone before the message starts.Advanced design allows this machine to save messages without needing batteries in the event of a power outage.I would definitely suggest this unit to a friend and would select another At&T machine in the future.

I'm impressed
Well, even in 2020 some rural residents still have to fight for phone services. Our only available company decided to drop voicemail, even for our business line. This presented the difficult task of finding a way to have voicemail that could be retrieved by people in and out of the office remotely, without everyone having to give access to confidential information on a computer. THIS DOES EXACTLY THAT. Programmed my own message, reset the code to what I wanted. Tested it, and absolutely impressed and thankful. I hate change - I like this.

So far, so good
Easy to set up with may voice prompts and few buttons.I like that you get several options for how many rings to answer after; it could be all in my head but I swear it records fewer robocalls because I can set it for an odd number. I feel like they are set to start after a pick-up after an even number of rings. My previous machines all had to be set for even numbers. I have this one set for 5 and I've gotten fewer messages. You can enable or disable when the number is read back before each message plays. Also, you can set it where you don't hear your outgoing message every time a call records.Display blinks with the number of messages left but because it doesn't tilt very high up and the audio indicator of messages left (beeping at 15 second intervals) isn't very loud (if there's a way to adjust that, I haven't found it) you can't just easily walk past the room, glance over your shoulder and notice if you have messages. First world problem, yes, just thought I'd mention it for people that might matter to. But not a deal breaker.

Not all features worked.
I bought this as a gift for my 89 year old father because his old one no longer recorded messages. He said everything worked all right except the adjustment for number of rings before answering. No matter what setting he chose, it always answered on the 8th ring. He said no one will let it ring that long to leave a message so he switched it out for his old one again and will put this one in his garage sale.

Eassy to use. Worth the cost.

Easy to use, compact, and inexpensive.
This is the fourth answering machine I've had, and the second electronic one (my first two used tape). It's the easiest one to use I've ever owned: the voice prompts talk you through the various ways you can set it up -- how many rings before it picks up, do you want an audible alert, and many other options. Just read the instructions, then listen to the voice. Don't worry about whether using an answering machine is "old-fashioned." It's simple, trouble-free, and inexpensive.

Fails its primary task.
There were several things I liked about this unit, but it failed in its primary task—recording messages. The first few seconds of a recording were clear but then static could be heard and it grew until the message was unintelligible. I changed phones but the result was always the same.

Works well
I have my answering machine so that I need not try to hurry to my phone when it rings. If my phone rings and I am not near it, I let the machine pick up and listen to the message later and return the call or not. I live alone and getting to my phone is not always easy for me so this has simplified my life. Thank you
