Unbelievably simple to set up...
My LG DVD player arrived days earlier than scheduled and I excitedly unpackaged it so that I could start using it to make sure all was ok before ditching my hefty old combi unit.Only to find I couldn't use it as there was no HDMI cable included as was specified in the description.I was so eager to try it out and to get rid of the old one that I decided to outsource a cable which was delivered same day at an extra combined total of £10.95,which obviously increased the whole price somewhat. However, six hours after delivery and the most easy set-up ever of a compact little DVD player which was dwarfed by the "oldie" I can honestly report that it is just amazing....the sound and colours/clarity are so,so much better; tested by inserting a disc from a CSI Miami box set and the colours of sea, sand and all else is a real "wow" factor.Even with the necessary added expenditure on the cable it is still a very reasonably priced player, considering the combi even when first purchased years ago was just under £300.Catching up with the times has increased my viewing pleasure in a matter of minutes.Highly recommend and might even get another to keep by as a back-up for the day it decides it's had enough...hopefully a good while yet, though!

Excellent DVD player
I needed a multi-region dvd player as I have a lot of Region 1 dvds. With this in mind I popped over to Currys and was informed that they don't sell multi region players. ?? The same was also true in Argos (Argos even had this exact same dvd player in store but it hadn't been unlocked and so would only play Region 2 discs). Again, ??I wonder if they have this trouble in the US ?Anyway, I then found this on Amazon, read the reviews (some of which were conflicting e.g. some said that this doesn't play Region 1 discs, some said that there is no HDMI lead included, no AAA battery etc.). I decided to go by the tried and trusted...hope for the best and expect the worst. I'm so glad I did. This player is brilliant. The picture is really excellent, it plays all region dvds and it's also easy to set up.The contents: 1 multi-region dvd player. One 1.5m HDMI cable. I remote control with AAA battery included. A set of instructions which you don't need and that's about it.The set-up: Unplug your old player and throw it in the bin or give it away or burn it or something. Plug the new dvd player's power lead in. Connect the HDMI lead to the back of the player and the other end to the back of the TV. Put the power on, insert a dvd, crack open a beer and enjoy. Simples!! And if I can set it up anyone can!!Positives; All of the aboveNegatives: None (There might be a slight niggle with some buyers about the length of the HDMI cable. It's only 1.5m and so depending on how you have your system set up you might need to purchase a longer lead). To sum up then this a brilliant player and cheap!! Highly recommended.

Confirmed able to play Region 1 disks.
It is a basic player with legacy software that brought me back 20 years, but it does the trick with any of my old DVDs.

Doesn't do what's on the tin
This is, I suppose, as much a critique of Amazon as it is of the item under review. The LG DP542H is the third DVD player I have reurned in as many months. The first, a Sony, was damaged, probably in transit as it was poorly packaged for a sensitive electronic device (I suggest you opt for Amazon's own packaging). The second, a Panasonic, and this LG LG DP542H had one discernible fault (after discovering it I lost patience): it isn't, as Amazon claims, multi-regional. It will only play Region 2 discs. I learn from Google that there is a simple fix for this, though none of the suggested mothods worked for me. Other suggestions posted online required technical skills that are beyond me. In any case, doctoring a new device shouldn't be part of the purchase deal. Nor should working blind. My LG DP542H came without a manual, a common practice these days imposed on us in the name of paper-saving. The manufacturers need to be reminded that grateful trees don't write reviews; disgruntled users do. In the end I visited my local, very small electrical shop and bought a Majority multi-regional DVD player. It's a no-frills machine, but it comes with a handbook and - and - it pays PAL and NTSC discs automatically.
