This DVD Drive is a great purchase. LG makes some very dependable drives
This DVD Drive is a great purchase. LG makes some very dependable drives. I have purchased several of these this past year for my offices and have had no failures. Read and write speeds are good. This has the M-Disc feature built in, so if you use m-discs for burning those discs will outlive you by more than a few centuries. Bottom line this is a solid built drive, with little failure and great features. Putting all that together in a package that cots under $20 and you have yourself a must buy. 10/10

I immediately burned 4 new CD's and it worked like a charm
Took 20 minutes to install in my desktop. When I plugged my computer back in, Windows recognized it right away, no problem. I immediately burned 4 new CD's and it worked like a charm. My old one I probably burned 300-400 discs on since 2010. It served me well but was noisy and sometimes took a few seconds to open. No problems like that with this one. This one is so quiet you wont know it is working. I am always happy when I get new electronic things and they work the first time. And for $25.00 you cant beat it.

Solid, workhorse optical drive
LG optical drives have, for years, been workhorses--dependable, steady Eddies that rarely produce coasters. For five years now I've had an LG combo Blu-Ray drive, and I've burned well over a thousand CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs on it, and can't remember the last time it failed to burn a disc successfully. I also have a Plextor drive, which I *thought* was the benchmark to which other drives were compared. I've had so many issues with the Plextor drive tray getting stuck that I gave up on it a few months ago and replaced it with this LG multi-drive, and so far the LG drive has lived up to my expectations. It reads and records every format of disc that I have except Blu-Ray, of course, and seems to plow right through problem discs as well--ones with scratches or smudges. It can't do miracles, of course, but the laser pickup seems to be very forgiving of scratches and imperfections on the disc surface. The unit is quiet while in operation, though some wind noise is unavoidable when recording at speeds over 24x (a disc spinning at 48x is gonna make noise no matter which drive is turning it).Setup is standard for any 5.25" SATA device. There are four screws to mount, and SATA data and power jacks in back. All operating systems today should automatically detect and install the driver, and even an SATA-1 interface and cable are sufficient, so you can install this in practically any desktop with an SATA jack. Please note that the OEM version does not come with an SATA cable or Molex to SATA power adapter, so if you're adding a second drive you'll need the SATA data cable, and if your power supply doesn't have SATA power plugs you'll also want to grab one of those adapters. There's not much else to say about this. It's a great drive, especially for the price, and if it lives up to the reputation of previous LG drives, I'll still be using this thing five years from now.

So far, so good - Mac Pro 2009 - Mavericks & Mojave
I use a Mac Pro 2009. I use (both) Mavericks & Mojave. This DVD.CD player works well for both.I gave 5 stars because it works well for its price.I had to remove its door's faceplate (which is expected).Turn it upside-down & use a tiny flathead screw-driver to unlatch its plastic clasps.

Good, but Build Quality Not What it Once Was
This thing works as it should and for a very good price. The only negative is that the build quality is not what it once was for LG devices. On the unit I got the tray doesn't quite come all the way out because it rubs on the opening it comes out of. The friction stops it short. That will probably smooth itself out over time and does not affect function, but my faith in LG products is now a bit lower.

As adversticed and works good for ripping audio CDs and burning DVDs
There are a few 1-star reviews for this product that are incorrect. The most common one is no box, manual, screws, cables, software, etc. This is a bulk/OEM drive. So you don't get anything with it. It's just a drive in a generic Amazon box. Just wanted to get that out of the way.I've been using this drive to rip audio CDs mainly. I use Exact Audio Copy (EAC) to do secure rips. Audio CDs don't have error checking/correction so you need to use a secure ripping software like Exact Audio Copy (EAC). This drive supports "Accurate Stream" and "C2 Error Reporting" features that EAC uses.I've burned a few DVDs and they have all been good. Ideally you want to burn at the SLOWEST speed to get a good burn. This goes for any brand of burner, not just this LG. Same goes for the blank discs that you buy. Cheap no-name blank media are not good quality and may have burn issues or your burned discs won't be readable a few years later. I learned that the hard way. Blank media by Verbatim and Sony are the best, but read the reviews to see who is making the current batches.

Perfect drive
With everything cloud based or wireless nowadays, you hardly need CD/DVD drives anymore. But some hardware or software packages might come with the physical disk. And then what would you do?You can copy disk into ISO and then create its equivalent on USB drive. But it takes time and you need another computer to do it.To avoid hassle, it is nice to have an inexpensive and simple drive to be used once in a blue moon for such occasional installations. This drive is such device. It is perfect for the purpose. It is not a writer, but I did not need a writer.
