This is perfect for shredding cabbage for kraut. It would also work for slicing onions, carrots, apples, zuchinni, cucumbers, shredding head lettuce or other firm vegetables-I don't think it would work for things like peaches. I took others advice and oiled it with vegetable oil after washing it and drying it throughly. I let it sit for 24 hours to let the oil soak into the wood and dry before using it. It took me about 15 minutes to shred a huge head of cabbage the size of a basketball! Yea, we get them that big. If I had known how quick this was going to be, I would have bought one years ago. I just need a bigger container now! Have to scrounge up a 5 gallon bucket. Will make kraut for everyone in the family next year.

Needed a cabbage shredder for making sauerkraut and this is it! The cabbage shreds very nicely and thin. Perfect for sauerkraut and coleslaw. Easy to use and looks beautiful in the kitchen.

I was looking for a while for a suitable cabbage shredder, and I finally found this one. It works great and is shredding very nicely and proper thicknesses. It is a bit bulky, but I think it should be to allow a half cabbage inside the carrier.The whole process is clean and efficient.The built is sturdy of solid quality. Be careful with your fingers!Very pleased with our new shredder.

Couple of issue that I've found with the product:1. beechwood is untreated, meaning that it will quickly absorb all the colorings from your favorite vegetables, staining it in the process. Despite this being wood, this is not good food safety.2. The movement of the slide are problematic, since sharp wood edges and soft nature of the wood, restricts its movements, that can become a problem when using the product.3. Overall wood finish, is doesn't NOT appear professional wood making, with the label 'made in germany' -- misleading, due to expectation of german quality.4. The metal blade -- is NOT adjustable, so you're stuck with one size cut ALL the time.I had to cover the wood with mineral oil, and this made the overall shredding process easier.

Just got done filling two 5 gallon crocks. This cutter works very good. Made wonderful kraut.

This works very well and you get very nice sauerkraut product.
