Whatever does it for you
This book was on my "recommendations list." From the summary and comments, I thought it perhaps related interesting yoga techniques that were not completely focused on sexuality, but the theme of the book can be summed up in a Freudian slip-like typographical error that appears on page 196. The pop-classic on bioelectromagnetic mechanics and consciousness by the late eccentric genius Itzhak Bentov is referenced on that page as Stalking the Wild Orgasm (instead of Stalking the Wild Pendulum). While the book makes some very valuable points (and provides some practical exercises) about sexuality, psychologic conditioning and re-conditioning, challenges in interpersonal relations, subclinical neuroses, and the spiritual quest-and presents them in an erudite way, it has flaws as well. For persons who have no point of reference about Tantra, Yoga, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sex Magic, or Kama Shastra or for persons who have cult- or pop-culture-focused reference points, this book will seem informative and fascinating, and it might be extremely valuable. Good for them!To the author's credit, she is uplifting, appears to be sincere and, as I mentioned, makes some good points. However, her introduction about the history of Tantra is based on mythology (that's OK except when it is unquestioningly presented as historical fact), revisionism ("whatever I or my guru-cult say it is, that's what it is"), and a little bit of mis- or skewed information. The information on chakras and kundalini is a rehash of material from the popular literature, which is a rehash of itself ad infinitum (but which, again, might be very useful to the novice.)Many of the techniques described in the book may be familiar to yoga- and tantric-oriented practitioners regardless of whether they engage in kama shastra (that is, sexual disciplines). Certain techniques and "siddhis," including the ability to have sustained, ecstatic full-body orgasms, can develop spontaneously in such practitioners as effects of non-sexualized disciplines (that means that such experiences are related to kundalini activation by whatever means; not necessarily by practicing how to masturbate in a "spiritual way" or by practicing elaborate forms of tattva shuddhi while you're screwing, although all that is "Tantric" and works, too). Also, casual instruction of such practices as so-called "bodyflow" should NOT be related in a book (gee whiz, see the author's cribbed comments on the dangers of unsupervised experimentation with kundalini processes).I think the work of Margo Anand might be a better source of guidance on enhancing or spiritualizing sex or using sex as a spiritual discipline (with or without a partner)-similar practices are described. If one wants to learn about Tantra, that's a bit more complicated. Tantra is an umbrella term for a very wide range of practices and belief systems for which the sexual aspect is a distinct and overly promoted part. If you can stand scholarly texts about beliefs and practices (including ritual sex practices and other esoterica) of anthropologically authentic Tantric communities, try reading Kundalini Energy of the Depths by Lillian Silburn or perhaps plow through the Mahanirvana Tantra. Some of the work of Georg Fuerstein and Harish Johari also might provide credible information.

Must must read!
This was the most intense reading I've done so far! I read the whole book in 13 hours. I must say this should be read before the Jewel in the Lotus in my opinion. I felt like I was in a therapy session the whole read. Exceptional!

Beyond Trantra... It contains so much, Read it with your HEART.
A such beautiful book. I absolutely love this book that I don't even want to stop when I started. I sometimes would read the same paragraph a couple times to feel the messages behind.

A textbook to a course
Be warned that if you already own "Jewel in the Lotus," by the same author and Sunyata Saraswati, this repeats a lot of that material. It goes into more depth scientifically and philosophically than that publication, if that interests you, but there are only a handful of new exercises. It is, along with "Jewel", a textbook for the practical tantra course run by Avinasha and Saraswati and the full benefit of it can, in all likelihood, only be reaped from doing the course.
