Q: Must the ice be clear before it goes into the press, in order to obtain a clear result?

If you want a transparent ball, you must use a transparent piece of ice. If you use cloudy ice, you will get a perfect but opaque ball.

Q: Where can I find ice molds/trays large enough for this press? I can't seem to find any 2.8in or larger.

I make my own using a small cooler filled 2/3 will water. Freeze for about 24 hours. Drain remaining water. This provides a CLEAR ice block big enough to cut and use in ice maker. If you use a “mold” that fits the block, you will have air bubbles that make the ice ball cloudy and not clear. My method works great!
