There's a reason I keep buying the Filterbuy brand of air return filters - they work, they fit; and they're sturdy! There's an arrow to tell you which side goes up; and a space to write in the date you've replaced them. Couldn't be easier - you just pop them out, swab down the vent, and put the new one back in - no cleanign necessary! The price is pretty good these days for a 2-pack; and much less than at Lowe's or Home Depot. I use mine 3 months before changing them out - they're thick enough that no nastiness gets out the other side of the filter or falls down to the floor.
