Great for weathering models
I like these pastels, better than any other I have for adding a little weathering to areas that need it. The material sticks good any where you place it. I have not had a need to remove it, so I can't comment on that, but you can if needed. I also have several other brands of powdered chalks, Dr. Ben's, artists pastels like Rembrandt and Sennelier Soft Pastels and a few others that I use a lot, but none stick on and weather as instantly as these PanPastel's do. However, the Sennelier and Rembrandt I use with alcohol, and they act more like a paint when doing it with this method, and is a great weathering technique (If you are familiar with Sierra West models, you know what I mean). There doesn't seem to be much pastel powder in the compartments, as they look maybe 1/4" deep(?), but this stuff doesn't need a lot to give you the effect you need. Consequently, they will last a very long time. And they are in the solid, not a loose powder, more like a woman's compact, if you've seen one. Also, at first, having all the 'removable' little pots in one large plastic case seemed a little weird at first, but I have grown to like it like this, as I can move around from pot to pot and easily mix any color I need on the part I am weathering with ease. But you can take them out and screw them into each other if needed. They come with one lid, so to store them any other way than in the plastic holder, you would either have to stack them or maybe purchase more lids. But this is just a small annoyance. I have two sets, the Rust/Earth colors and Grays/Grime/Soot, 7-Packs. For me, that is plenty, and I use the browns much more than the greys. I put off buying these for a long time due to the cost and that I had a lot of other weathering powders already, and yes, they are a little expensive. But I would recommend these to anyone who likes or needs to weather their models. I was lucky to have a gift certificate for the first set, so it didn't cost me much, but when I started using them, I didn't hesitate to get the second set.

SO EASY...
Great product. Easy to use and really transforms models. I wish all of the colors had their own lids though...

These will be useful with new application techniques.
These are intense colors. On some surfaces (non-glossy) they can almost act like a paint -- you have to work at it to remove excess.I'm developing methods to "apply lightly". So far I really like these. It looks like they will last a long time. The containers are 2 1/4 inches in diameter. They are 1/2 inch tall and the pastels power is 1/4 inch deep. Each container is threaded male on top and female underneath. When removed from the packaging you see in the photo, they are intended to be screwed together in one stack of seven. There is one lid to cover the top container. This scheme is very hard to use. You can't identify the colors very well when they are screwed together, so finding what you want is a hit-and-miss operation. The plastic has a high level of friction and its hard to unscrew at the point in the stack you want to access. A very, very, very light application of vaseline will help greatly (apply to the female threads so you don't get near the powder). This is sort of a neat idea but I'm going to get the extra lids.

Good product Crappy Shipping
I love the colors...but the darkest color was broken all over the place...so it took forever to get it off the other colors to see what they actually looked like. They were just chucked in a thinly padded envelope with plenty of space for them to move around. I don't think I will be ordering any more of these through Amazon...I'll find somewhere else so I can get 7 colors... instead of 6 and a bunch of powder. Again...once I got them cleaned off I did like the colors and will use them a lot.

Very impressed!
I got both this set, and the grime/soot set for weathering model trains. Very impressive results, very quick and easy to use, and has plenty of product. It definitely goes on, and sticks better, than average big box store pastels. And, a lot less mess, as this product you so not have to grind/sand/scrape into a powder to use.One slight downside I found, the actual pastels do not have individual lids, only the center one does in each set, the rest have just the trays covering them. Not that big of an issue, until you, 1, ship it, and 2, try to store them differently. My painting/weathering kit box (I keep most often used colors and tools in a small tool box, back stock and less often used items in a larger tote box.) is not big enough to hold these inside the trays, so I will have to either, 1, keep these in a different location, 2, get a bigger storage option for my kit box, or 3, buy lids separately. And the no lids caused a slight problem in shipping, as my package had black "dust" everywhere, from that color "pastel powder cake" getting broken. This slight issue aside, very nice product, and, at least for me, well worth the price. I very highly recommend.

This set is awesome for skin colors. It's the perfect mix of browns for all skin types.
I love love love Pan pastels. I am a figure sculptor, and use them for coloring my polymer clay figures. They are very soft, and can be used with many tools. I like to scoop some out onto a piece of pastel art paper I use as a palette, and then I can blend the colors to make other colors. I apply them with a brush, both wet and dry. This set is awesome for skin colors. It's the perfect mix of browns for all skin types. In addition, it also comes in a palette. something I haven't had till now. What I didn't notice before purchase was that the set only comes with one lid. The palette does have a top so the pastels are covered, yet I wish I could choose to store them in the palette or on a shelf, because they don't store well in the palette - spacewise, not qualitywise. Now I have to play musical lids with my other colors if I choose to use them in the palette. The set also comes with a few of the sponge applicators that you can use to apply the pastels.
