wonderful method and puzzle collection! but definitely not suited for newer learners
i've yet to completely a full round of seven loops (usually struggling with the time commitment required after a few of them), but the woodpecker/seven circles method has notably improved my tactical vision.if you are a newer learner, you would also benefit from this method, but even the beginner section here was pretty challenging when i first was getting more serious with chess.if you are newer but still want to try this method, i would recommend a puzzle book made more explicitly to demonstrate themes, such as Chess Tactics for Champions by Susan Polgar. the puzzles are arranged by theme, which can make them trivial sometimes if you aren't a complete beginner tactically, but i got around this using chessvision.ai's ebook reader to export the puzzles to lichess and randomize them.either way, the method is great, and the puzzle collection is great. just don't expect all of them to have beginner friendly themes and don't expect to get all of them the first time around! set a time limit like 10 minutes for each puzzle and move on if you don't get it. if that makes your success rate too low, it's best to come back later c:

Great for beginners
This is very helpful for beginners. I have been told that the best thing to study after you have some basic chess knowledge down is tactics until you are rated 1500. I think this is the rating he said now I'm not sure. This book is very challenging. In order to find the correct solution you will need to look a few moves ahead. This really stretches your ability to calculate and make decisions. If you have practiced tactics with free online websites, you may have noticed that they are nearly always a check forced move calculation. While this is helpful, not all great move sequences in games can come about like this. The woodpecker method includes many puzzles where you have no check forcing moves. This really brings tactics to a more practical application. The carry over to real games is immediate. Now I know many have said that the puzzles are prohibitively difficult, but if you push past the challenge and try your best you can improve. Just work through the puzzles then check the solutions and explanations and your game will skyrocket. I think that it is best to start with the free online puzzles that I mentioned earlier and then, once they become too simple, move onto this. I have gone from 600ish to 860 rating and am continuing to climb quickly. I believe that this book is the reason.

Love this book!
I love this book. Let me first start off by saying that I really enjoy all the books that Quality Chess publishes. All there books have an amazing quality to them, and the layout is superb.I’ve had this book for about a month, and managed to cycle through the easy section(222 puzzles) three times. I actually plan on doing this method with each individual section, instead of going through entirety of the book, and then cycling through it four times. Just cycling through the easy section three times has brought great results for me. My puzzle score on Chess.com has been lingering around the low 2100’s for the past few months. After going through through the easy section, I’ve increased my puzzle score over 2300- as of the tonight. So I don’t know if my score has increased because I’ve decided to focus my energies on tactics or if this book has helped. I think it’s a mixture of both factors. So I definitely recommend this book to people who want to increase there tactical awareness and even to people who just want to have fun. This book is a real joy, and I plan on using it for years to come. Cheers!Update 04/09/21: Passed a rating of 2400 on Chess.com as of tonight.Update 09/05/21: 2641 on Chess.com as of tonight.

One mistake (corrected in the paperback edition)at the beginning of the book
The book looks good, but something that really annoys me is to find errors in the solutions. Exercise 11 is supposed to come from the game of Steinitz vs Meitner, Vienna, 1882. But the solution does not correspond to this game, but to the game of Mackenzie vs Steinitz, Vienna, 1882. And using the name index to find the solution was not useful.Addenda: In May 2020 I purchased the paperback edition and the error was corrected. Thanks.

Great collection of puzzles and a seemingly great system for tactics training
I have just started this book and will probably concentrate on the easy section for a while (222 puzzles). I plan to go through them in the suggested method. The puzzles themselves are great because the obvious answer is not always the right one (AKA, try to sacrifice the queen etc) so they feel incredibly realistic. This has the potential to be the best practice on tactics I have seen especially if done by the method they suggest (go through all the problems once--4 weeks, then next in a shorter time period--2 weeks, then a 3rd time in a shorter period--1 day). I may use slightly different time periods but will plan to do something similar.
