Rather expensive but always good to have a spare
I just don't mess about with bike chains. They are a consumable component and there is always the temptation to try and save some money where consumables are concerned. But they are also a safety critical component and the consequences of breakage or sudden slippage can be severe. If you are lucky enough to avoid serious injury in the event of a chain failure then it'll still ruin your day.I speak from experience as somebody whose day was ruined as a consequence of failure of a quick link in the chain of someone I was riding with. I have also heard two first hand accounts of serious injuries (hospitalisation with subsequent surgeries) from people whose chains snapped on them.So I always use genuine Shimano chains and chain components.These quick links are an alternative to the old connecting pins and I honestly have no preference between the two systems. I fit chains, wear them out and replace them. Fitting chains at home I find either chain joining method equally easy. I bought these because I just fancied having spares and to carry with me on rides... just in case. However they do require a large amount of force to snap them on, with the appropriate tool, and I'm not sure the tool-less fitting method will work (that being, putting the link in place on the chain just behind the (small) chainring and applying tension on the chain by pressing hard on the pedals). These require more force to snap in place than any other brand I have tried in the past but this does give me a lot more confidence that they will not come loose.They are NOT reusable. I tried refitting one on an old chain just as a matter of interest. It snapped on with very little force and came back off equally easily so I would never risk re-using one.Next time I fit a new Shimano quick link chain I'll try and remember to have a go at it using the tool-less method....
