The Writer's Bible
This book is brilliant and I am so pleased I was able to get it here at a very reasonable price. The condition was perfect and I loved that inside had little posted notes from the previous owner with notes on what they had been writing. I loved that! This book is a must-have for all authors, writers, journalists etc basically anyone in the industry who puts words on paper.

Indispensable!
The Chicago Manual of Style is simply indispensable, especially if you speak British English but write for the American market. It gives you a detailed breakdown of most things you need to know and quite a few things you didn't know you needed to know. It is not only a manual of style but also breaks down the publishing process in more detailed way than most guide books that purport to focus on that alone. In many ways it is a lot better than its British competitors. I wish there was one for British English!

Answers most questions but not all
Obviously, it covers all the basics and most of the advanced style issues, but I was surprised to find it didn't answer all of my questions, notably regarding foreign titles. Or perhaps it did, but I just couldn't locate where -- information on any given topic is often scattered across several sections, and although this is indicated ("see also 1.234"), it did make me feel that the answers I was looking for might be buried away in there somewhere but impossible to find. This is something they apparently addressed in the 16th ed.; the following page explains the reorganisation as well as the most important new points introduced in the 16th ed.:[...]I ordered the 15th ed. because it was very cheap (around £6) and I needed some quick basic answers as well as some more advanced things. But I think the best solution, even if you manage to find a heavily discounted copy of the 16th, is to subscribe to the online edition, though it is definitely a bit pricey for anyone thinking long-term (about £20 per year).

Essential reading
More wonderful advice from those gooky geeks at the University of Chicago. This book is, quite simply, the best book about how to create books available. An essential reference for authors, wannabes, editors, proofreaders, publishers and geeks.Similar to the previous editions this fifteenth edition has a new section on American English - essential for authors wishing to get published in the growing US technical market, vastly improved electronic publications section (roll on 16th edition!) and all written with the same old authoritative reverance worthy of yet another classic.Buyers of 14th edition will almost certainly want to upgrade just to stay current.Five stars - this book is essential reading.

The "Go To" Usage Reference Book
Pretty much indispensable. I would like a slimmer version with a lot of the stuff about publishing left out, but it is at least comprehensive. I don't think the 16th Edition is that much more improved, so I was happy to go with the earlier edition and save myself a bundle.

This book is a must for publishing. It is ...
This book is a must for publishing. It is well conceived and reflects perfectly the common usage of the North American market. It should be an important reference for indies as well. That would help to give more professionalism to the new, a bir wild independent publishers.

Chicago manual, 15th ed
Although, I have used APA in the past, having to learn the fundamentals of Chicago style was made much easier with this book. Once again, the seller (calibris) provided quick delivery (after the first seller let me down by not being able to ship by the max date set, thus making me miss my deadline) and extremely excellent customer service. I would mostly like purchase all my future books from this seller!

My Publisher's Choice (What They Want is What I''ll Get)
Every publisher has a standard for guidelines on grammar, punctuation, etc. My publisher uses the CMOS. I have found that there is little difference from one issue to another, so I use the 15th edition, which is cheap, while they're using the latest--the 17th or 18th, which is not cheap.

The Bible of proper grammar and punctuation.
TThe Chicago Manual of Style is a must-have for all writers, and also for people who do a fair amount of writing at work. In one of my writers' online forums, a couple of snooks said proper grammar and punctuation is something they could care less about, because if takes them away from what they do best: write books that tell people how either to make money, or to become a better business entrepreneur. They say they rather pay someone to get it right for them.I say that's total crap.If you want to write anything you should be a perfectionist in using proper grammar and punctuation in your writings. And the Chicago Manual of Style is the best book available to help you get things right. Then, after you have a polished work, of course you should send it to a proofreader/editor to catch any mistakes you might have missed.Buying the Chicago Manual of Style is a no-brainer for writers. However, I'm starting to believe some writers, especially those in the self-help, make-a-quick-buck field, have less brain matter to start with; just ambition to make a buck.[...]

I love this style manual
I love this style manual. I personally find the rules of the AP style guide annoying, as that guide seems to contain compromises that were designed to meet the needs of the aging newspaper publishing industry, rather than meeting the needs of readers. The Chicago Manual of Style, on the other hand, is all about communicating with clarity within the traditions of the English language.

the premier style guide for published American English
It is perhaps time to worry if you feel particulary warm and affectionate towards a book like THE CHICAGO MANUAL OF STYLE.But don't worry too much. For writers, editors, and publishers, there is something deeply satisfying about having at the elbow a treasury of accumulated wisdom and convention like 'the Chicago', all mapped out and trackable by both table of contents and indices.Consider the hyphen. This will only sting for a moment. If your aunt Bessie is an extremely well-read old snorter, why would you say that your Auntie is 'extremely well read' (in a hyphen-less sort of way)? The Chicago has an answer for you at 7.82, prefaced by the kind of judicious statement on trends and preferences vs. rules that could make even a linguist - those most irrascible members of humankind - relax. There are other invaluable style guides, among which the Economist's volume deserves pride of place. Yet the Chicago is irreplaceable, informative, and even fun.

Good book for grad students
I'm an engineering grad student who still struggles with writing, specially punctuation and prepositions.Although the preposition section is limited, I found all the information that I always wanted to have regarding punctuation.English is not my mother language, and I recognize that I need help to improve my writing style, so far this book is a great help.Pros:-Information is provided in very compact and easy to understand way;-All one needs to know about referencing styles;-Well done index, makes the search for information straightforward-Not expensive, but still well built book;Cons:-I don't have many complains whatsoever, but it would be useful to provide templates for the most commonly used word processing programs, although for the current price, I don't think that one should expect that.
