Collins Robert French Unabridged Dictionary, 10th Edition

**I’m not a French speaker, so I cannot comment on the quality of the translations provided.** What I can tell you, however, is that this is a glorious dictionary that has all the features that one would want while learning a new language. I am a German speaker as well, and the use of dictionaries was of course crucial in my studies, so I have some benchmarks for what all good bilingual dictionaries should have.First: this is a “two-way” bilingual dictionary, so French to English as well as English to French definitions are given. There is precious little information here on the page unfortunately, but it is worth mentioning.Second: this dictionary is massive, but well-bound and beautiful.Third: each definition is given with tons of context, which is beyond useful. What a word means is only as useful as how it is used in contextual phrases, and thankfully this dictionary provides several example phrases per word to demonstrate the nuances of how the word will be used in context. For anyone doing literary translation work, this is a deeply useful feature. Examples given seem to be contemporary as well.Fourth: there is a middle section of some useful phrases for study. Might come in handy.Overall, I was very excited to thumb through the dictionary. Having one like this is absolutely essential to language learning, and it sets the bar high for the grade above pocket dictionaries.

I had this brand dictionary, bought 20+ years ago. I have liked it better than the Larousse I had before it. The pages had started falling off the binding in great chunks, however, and I found there were words I was encountering not in it, so I got the newer, unabridged 10th ed. I must say the pages are not as white or thick as in my previous one, but I acclimated to this one just fine and have not had difficulty seeing the words--all head words are in blue, so there is a contrast to the black typed definitions.Maybe this is not important to others, but I like that the Collins/Robert shows both British and American English spellings and translations, where there's a difference.

I was a little disappointed in the thickness of the pages. They are very thin and very see through on the other side. The pages seemed like thin tissue paper. I was expecting more of a quality dictionary so it will be durable at this price point.

Great dictionary, easy to find words, different senses are clearly illustrated, many examples. I couldn't be happier with a bilingual dictionary.

This is the dictionary that is usually recommended for anyone who wishes to seriously study French. It includes cultural vignettes which are really useful, as well as a section on using the actual language in daily activities.

This dictionary is excellent, but though it's described as a 2018 version of the 10th edition, I received a 2016 version of the 10th edition. The ISBNs differ despite Amazon's own caution, "Why is ISBN important?"
