The drive is great and easy to use, but the 4TB version is very fragile. This drive dropped maybe 3 inches and became completely unusable and unreadable

..it's why I bought it.This newest G-drive is being used as my local backup drive for a Surface laptop. I have an older G-Tech external drive I've been using (for many years) as my Time Machine backup for my Mac. I also have a third G-Tech portable external drive (mounted in a shock resistant, water proof casing) I use for local backup of my photo library.I have read of G-Tech reliability; they trend as the preferred choice of professionals (videographers and photographers in particular). The reputation of G-Tech drives seems to be quite good and my experience thus far has done nothing to make me think otherwise. G-Tech drives tend to cost a little more but, IMHO, their consistent reliability makes it worth it.And that's why I bought this one; it's a G-Tech.

Don't be fooled, USB-C (USB 3.1 Gen 1) is the same speed as USB 3.0. A higher speed is USB 3.1 Gen 2. Gen 1 is slower.It was easy to set up this drive for Windows 10 and the copying speed was slow about 100 mb/s. With a 3 year limited warranty, if copying speed is not highly important, it appears to be a very good value. However, after minimal use, the drive failed and formating was unsuccessful--too many bad sectors.If you need warranty service, they will not answer the phone in less than 2 hours and your email will not be answered in less than 7 to 10 days. If you request an online RMA, the instructions are not written in understandable English, They use words or acronyms that are not in the dictionary or not applicable. That is, if you Google acronyms none shown are applicable to the item. The instructions don't tell you if you should also return the cables and if you do, if they are returned. They refuse to use understandable words like G-Drive Mobile, or internal, external, or portable hard drives. Instead, the instructions include non-removable hard drive and Chassis (G-DOCK, G-RAID Removable, G-RAID Studio, G-SPEED Studio, G-SPEED Studio XL and G-SPEED Q) empty chassis ev Removable Cartridge (G-DRIVE ev, G-DRIVE ev SSD, G-DRIVE ev 220, G-Drive ev ATC) ev cartridge.It has been over a week and I have not received an answer to my email question, "Should I return the cables with the drive?" And, when I called, after being put on hold for 2 hours, I hung up.

Drive requires formatting in order to use. If you do not know how to format a hard drive, you need to use their software. Drive shows 931gb available to use after formatting.

I've been using this G-Drive for over a year now. I am a photographer and storing my photos are extremely important to me. After having two brand new Western Digital hard drives crash on me, G-Drive was recommended to me by one of my professors and it hasn't disappointed me! I purchased an online backup as well where I can plug in my G-Drive and it automatically backs up in a second place, just in case. I highly recommend this drive and will continue to purchase it in the future.***Some common mistakes by those who do not know how to properly care for any hard drive are not keeping it on a hard surface, not keeping it still, and not ejecting it. This goes for all hard drives and are required in order for any drive to work properly! If you see these complaints, the owner is simply not using the drive right.

While this is a mechanical rotating disk, and you can feel it vibrating slightly, it is performing well for now. I would suggest anyway take special care of not moving the unit while working with it. Even after turning off, it takes sometime to stop spinning, so leave it at rest as a precaution.I could very easily reformat the drive to the newest APFS Apple format, which I wanted to do just from the beginning. I backed up the software for Windows it came with as a precaution, and deleted the small partition that came in. Capacity is reported correctly at 4 TB at all times.

I have purchased all of my hard drives from Amazon, but I had not purchased a new one for at least a couple of years. When I did my new Mac Mini set up, I decided to purchase a 2 TB hard drive to add to it. When it arrived, I thought something was wrong. Surely they had given me the wrong size! The photo shows the new drive next to the 256 GB LaCie Rugged that I purchased about five or six years ago – which still works on my old computer by the way – and I was blown away by the difference in size.It connected easily to my new Mini, and the computer saw it right away. I was able to partition it with no problem and it has proven, so far at least, to be quite a workhorse and incredibly fast. I am always amazed at the speed of the evolution of technology, and this is definitely no exception. Recommended.

The product itself works very well. In this case the manufacturer/distributor assumes that users know how to make the drive work on an iOS device. There are no instructions included that I could find. It would be great if a YouTube link was provided for iPAD applications, as it would have saved me a bit of time to find a video that explained the correct operation.

Compré este disco para realizar backups de mi trabajo diario, y tener una copia de documentos y multimedia semanal. Lo primero, aunque no se mencione (o yo no lo recuerdo), está pensado para macbook, dado que las particiones que vienen de serie son apple (ver imagen).La calidad me ha convencido nada más tenerlo en la mano. Tiene dos tapas metalizadas, con una carcasa realizada en plástico inyectado que, pese a lo que pueda parecer, no le resta méritos. Se le ve muy bien acabado, el plástico es de gran calidad, no resbala, y el embalaje es muy bueno. Una vez conectado, el ruido es simplemente inexistente, no se escucha nada desde la unidad.Una vez me he "cargado" las particiones apple HFS, y he creado una nueva tabla de particiones GPT y creado una partición exFAT, para usar con mis ordenadores Linux (el principal, un alienware 17R4), he probado velocidades de copia y lectura usando USB 3.0 y USB-C 3.1 (via el puerto USB-C del alienware y de mi otro equipo). En el alienware, USB-C a USB-C, el disco "vuela": velocidades de copia de ficheros grandes cercanas a 300Mb/s, y para ficheros pequeños la velocidad media es como 10 veces la de mis discos anteriores USB 3.0.Por cierto, mencionar que, de serie, trae una partición con un programa de backup para windows, con licencia (ver imagen).Gran compra, aunque el precio sea un poco elevado, pero el peso, portabilidad, calidad y velocidad son justo lo que buscaba.

I see that some people have had problems with this drive not working after a few months so I waited before writing this review just in case! Well, I haven't had any problems with it - it's plug and play, super easy to use. I have a Mac and have a couple of G-Drives, both of which have never given me any problems. They're small so they tuck behind the screen nicely and I take one away when I go on hols so that I have access to all my files just in case I get a rushed job request in. Small enough to fit in my handbag when I go away. I take them to all my client meetings along with my laptop and they've not failed me yet. That being said, I look after them, I have never dropped one so I can't say for sure how hardy they'd be if that happened, I also don't try to move them whilst the disk is still whirring away but wait for them to completely disengage from my computer and stop whirring before moving them. I moved house recently so they were tossed around in a box for a bit and still work just fine. Great disk capacity - I use one of them for complete system back-ups, data transfer is quick and easy.

thanks to the helpful folks that buy Amazon products, I bought this knowing its not an SSD.but the read and write speeds are acceptable, I was able to back up my laptop quite easily.its the most compact HDD I have ever bought, and seen. its almost as small as my SSD I bought like a year ago. its amazing

Tiene una velocidad bastante buena, se ve robusto.La única pega que le veo (por eso no le pongo las 5 estrellas) es que hace un poquito de ruido (mi imac hace menos).Otra cosa que me molesta un poquito es que tiene una pequeña partición de 3-4gb que no hay forma de hacerla desaparecer, aunque la elimine, pienso que el disco duro la vuelve a crear. Tiene un par de utilidades, pero para pc, en mi caso en mac no me sirve absolutamente para nada.
