While this was written for young adults it's a quick read for adults, too, to introduce a painful chapter in human history. There's just enough detail that lets you know the gist of the issue without the 'gory' details which often discourage people.Historical value: A group of people, children, women, men and their families, we're singled out for extermination/genocide.Life application: how one ten year old child, determined to survive a living hell, managed to save herself and her sister. Later, her determination motivated her to resist being emotionally handicapped for life by coming to understand how to deal with those things in life that can't be changed. What living hells have we survived, that we can follow Eva's lead to use that hell for good in helping others, so that evil doesn't win?I'll buy copies for the young people in my life and look forward to discussing it with them. Great book!

Hard topic deftly handled
This is a book that could easily win a Newbery Medal. The difficult subject matter was presented with sensitivity and grace. The temptation in writing a book about children in the Holocaust would be to give in to righteous indignation and melodrama. Instead, the authors focus on the remarkable character of Eva, a twin who was determined to keep herself and her sister alive, even while undergoing severe physical abuse. The reader learns what it felt like to be a Jewish girl in a deadly environment, but is not overwhelmed by despair. We admire Eva as she finds numerous ways to survive, relying on unusual strength, determination, and luck.Although it would be understandable, there is never a hint of the overriding bitterness one might expect to hear from a survivor. Instead, the reader comes away with the feeling that even in the midst of the unspeakable, people can survive and go on to live satisfying lives.I think Rojany-Buccieri did an outstanding job of taking Kor's memories and translating them into a story that will fascinate junior readers. Bravo!

Great Information about the atrocities of the Auschwitz monster, Dr. Mengele.
I saw the amazing story of Eva Mosez Kor on television and it prompted me to research her books. I'm so glad that I did. Her story is true. The atrocities committed by this so-called doctor were abominable. I know the events at Auschwitz Birkenau are true. I have been there and saw the evidence myself. I pray that the world NEVER forgets and will tell their children and grandchildren about the horrors of this terrible war. Please, may it NEVER happen again!

Forgiveness
Eva Kor died on July 4, 2019. She was in her 90s. She was also one of the Last Holocaust survivors. She says a lot about her twin sister Mariam and how close they were. Eva was the stronger of the two, the leader and was the one who kept their spirits and their will to survive the war. It reminds me of the closeness of my sister. I met Eva in Terre Haute at the CANDLES Center. She did so much good and made the world award of what atrocities the Germans were guilty of by telling her story.

Painful, but educative and important read
Written primarily for young adult readers, the book, however, should be read by all. Eva and her twin sister, Miriam, were taken to Auschwitz along with their parents and two elder sisters. While, the parents and the older girls perished (how does the word ‘perish’ sound when you are talking about the death of human beings?), Eva and Miriam were allowed to live as they would be useful for medical “experiments” of Dr Josef Mengele. The author is recounting her experiences at the camp more than half a century after the events. But she has described the horrors in a restrained manner keeping her young audience in mind. And the horrors are no less vivid for that. At the end of her life, looking back at everything she went through decades ago, Mozes Kor forgives her tormentors and the hell that they sought to establish. Because, she has come to the conclusion, rightly, that the power of forgiveness is infinitely more powerful that the power of hatred. Painful, but educative and important read.
