Independent films are a bit tricky. Often you don’t know the director, the writers… or the actors, as a matter of fact. So those films are a gamble: very rewarding when they are entertaining, not so much when they are not.I made a blind purchase here, because the story seemed original, and I am very happy with my purchase. Supposedly the film was shot with next to no budget, well it doesn’t show. There are lots of various locations, places that we don’t usually in films, which make it even more interesting.It is hard to categorise this film, as it goes from comedy, to drama (heavy at times) and back to comedy again. Not wanting to reveal stuff, let’s say that as you go along, thing are not quite what they appeared at first. We follow the two main characters as they build a nice relationship through several adventures, funny or sad.Those characters are unusual, and I enjoyed spending time with them. For me it is a good sign, the main reason to watch a film even. Are the characters interesting? Would I like to find out what is going to happen to them? In “Wheels”, the answer is yes.As far as actors go, it is essentially a two characters film. Donavon Warren and Patrick Hume are both very good, very believable, very funny at times, and very dramatic at others. Diana Gettinger, Kevin McCorkle, and Samantha Siong are also excellent. This being said, I am especially in awe of Donavon Warren who, according to IMDb, lost 51 pounds to look like a real heroin addict. That is commitment, and I wish I had the same! And he also wrote the script and co-directed, which makes him pretty much Orson Welles. :-)Direction and editing are very good. The pace is nice, no monotonous passages. I must mention that the blu-ray is filled with extras, which is nice, including deleted scenes which are always enjoyable. My only complaint is that no directors/actors commentary if offered. Had I written, directed or acted in a film, nobody could keep me away from the recording booth. But maybe the commentary exists and will be offered for the 10th anniversary re-release. :-)So there you are: very unusual/unpredictable story, interesting characters, great acting, and well worth the purchase or renting.

Wheels is a powerful statement that makes you want to cry, laugh and vomit all at once. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late for us to better ourselves-- to act kinder. Since it's impossible in the world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves and the characters in this movie. It's message is important, crucial really, and it's beautifully stated in this wonderful movie.

I didn't know what to expect from this movie. Was it sappy? A thriller? Second rate? In reality, this is a movie of the highest order. It is a psychological thriller with a twist ending and throughout the movie, the shining beauty of the human soul will touch you. A beautiful movie, not to be missed, never sappy but completely riveting.

This is the definition of independent film. It's funny, it's warm and honest. The DVD has a bunch of really cool bonus features and the performances are lights out great. I highly recommend this film!

Way better than the Hollywood type Trainspotting sequel this year! Unpredictable, with plot twists...A good psychological thriller and lesson in human nature!
