This ball tool is huge--and so versatile and useful that, if I was going to start with only one tool, this would be it.It is incredibly useful for smoothing gum paste, for curling and furling the edges of petals and leaves (which it does so much more realistically than with smaller ball tools), and it also can act as a thinning and flattening tool when you use it to stretch out the gum paste so you end up with thinner petals.Since it is thick, it is comfortable and easy to control the pressure if you hold like a fat pencil so that you can make sweeping movements as you flatten. Makes everything look more natural and organic than if you just depend on the small rolling pin. It can also double as a small rolling pin when on its side.I am so lucky to have randomly found it. I didn't know it existed, I wasn't looking for it, I've never seen it anywhere else--it just came up in a search for something else and, luckily, I ordered it. Now, I just ordered a second one because, when I'm working on a project with others, the minute I put it down, somebody else grabs it.

I think these tools are the best out there. So many other brands fall apart or are flimsy. Ateco brand seems to be a better quality. This set has my favorite tool which is the one with the flat side on one end because it makes scooping fondant pieces up super easy! And the other end is great for rubbing edges thinner. Hands down the best!

This is very well made. I bought another cheaper modeling pad and the chemical smell coming off of it made me sick. Learned my lesson. This one may cost more but is it well made and no chemical smell or feel. It is also a good medium size.

Nice and sturdy, smooth ends and great for large projects and ruffles. Cleans nicely and no worries about pressing to hard that I break it (which I've done with some others) Totally worth the investment!

This mat has no odour, is well constructed and works very well. Packaging was a bit flimsy and was torn a bit but it had to come off anyway. Great value.

This is a piece of junk.This mat is not a single piece of foam, but is made of 2 thinner pieces GLUED together!(The glue is not odour free and is even still a bit sticky around the edges)In order to really be a food grade item, this should not made with glue!
