It was obviously old and it did not work
Recognising that this could be a complicated device to work, I got a qualified mechanic friend to use it for me. He tried it on 2 different cars and was satisfied that it did not work. Looking at the device, it was obvious from the scratches on the screen (the protective film had been removed) that it had been returned at least once, probably more. I returned it, enclosing a note suggesting that they bin it rather than sending it out again.
