Bird recognition?
This a nice book of bird pictures, drawn and painted by a competent artist. For the purposes of birding, or birdwatching, as we say in the UK, it is not nearly as satisfactory as a book of bird photographs as a means of recognizing birds in the wild.

Elegant and compact
This elegant little book introduces many of Maine's most well known and often-seen birds. It will appeal to casual or beginning birders, visitors who want to learn about the birds they see on their travels around the state, and Maine's nature-loving residents who simply want to enjoy more the birds they see around their backyards.Birds are grouped logically for ease of identification, some by habitat (e.g. loon, merganser, and grebe--all inland wetland species), others by similar appearance or habits (e.g. chickadee, nuthatch, creeper, wren--all small skulking species). The Wells' concise but information-filled descriptions often include references to Maine, in terms of the bird's preferred habitat, where in the state it is most likely to be found, or when it arrives in spring (if a migrant). Evan Barbour's illustrations are accurate and lifelike, clearly showing important field marks. The authors conclude the book with an excellent section detailing some of Maine's well-known and accessible birding hotspots, plus some great ways readers can take action to help birds. Serious birders may wonder why certain birds were omitted (Where is Red-breasted Nuthatch? Great Horned Owl? Common Raven? Admittedly these are briefly mentioned in comparison to similar species.) But the authors' intent was that their book not be an exhaustive field guide. Instead, by providing a manageable selection of birds they ensure beginners an easy entry into the world of bird watching. I for one am looking forward to my next birding trip to Maine, and this little book will be in my pocket with my binoculars!

Pictures are too small
I just downloaded this book while sitting at camp watching birds, but am disappointed that the images are so small and cannot be enlarged. It would be far more helpful if images were larger than an inch.
