Q: I would like it for my covered deck. How much space between the top of the heater and the roof is recommended?

I cut 7" out of mine making it 80" total leaving me with about 5" from a metal roof. So far not a problem, the paint is not blistering and has no signs of damage. I don't know if they listed anything in the instructions.....I'm a man, don't need any stinking instructions.

Q: Can this be used in the garage?

Yes you can use it in the shed or garage just cut it off
