most interesting book
saul steinberg is one of the great truly original artists, whose work i've loved since i was a kid.this book is a great read and gives one a very detailed picture of his life and the many people in it.one of his good friends in new york, alexander schneider was also a friend of mine, as i played many concerts with sasha, and adored his "bigger than life" lifestyle, and see that saul lived that same fabulous way and-i love reading about how all these great artists interacted with each other...thank you, deirdre bair!

Ist part very interesting, second part could not finish
The first part of this story is historically very interesting and I followed this journey of talent and survival around Europe and Asia, all based on his drawings which touched cerebral persons everywhere. Once in the USA, the author mostly lists all his accomplishments week in and out and after a while, we get it. I lost interest and never finished. But the first part is worth the reading.

A thorough look at the life and times of this iconic artist.
This is a very well well written biography. Saul Steinberg must have been a most elusive subject, but Ms. Bair seems to have researched Steinberg to a great depth. If you enjoy reading about the lives of artist's and their circle of family, friends and professional associated, then this book is for you. Also, of great interest are insights into life and culture in Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Trash
The book is largely trash, a long recitation of Steinberg's sexual affairs, the parties he attended, etc., without any consideration of his inner, creative life. Save yourself some time and read his "autobiography," Shadows and Reflections

All is fine
Dry. But if you are a Steinberg junky, worth it.

I tasted the sample and had to read the whole thing
I love Steinberg, and his life is as interesting as his drawings, so it happens. Bair has done a terrific job in terms of thorough research and adopting a breezy tone and pace that are nothing if not Steinbergian.

Very detailed and quite interesting but ultimately dry account of an enigmatic sensibility
Great for scholarly research on the chronological development of a major figure in the world of western art of the second half of the 20th century. However, it could have transcended its status as a straight-forwarded historical narrative by focusing more on his whimsical, quirky sensibility.Having read the book from cover to cover was like having a meal of meat and potatoes but no dessert, no brandy and cigar.

Where the drawing is more interesting than the hand that drew it
Linked her Beckett biography, less this one, probably because Steinberg is more interesting as an artist than as a man.

One Star
Dull not worth the money

Disappointing overview of Steinberg.
It is a good book, based on good research but the overview is too simplistic and biased toward the opinions of Steinberg's wife. Reading it feels like reading a gossip column. The picture the book paints of Steinberg does not match his artistic reputation as an outstanding artist.
