Dairy-heavy recipes pose a common health risk not addressed by the author
The recipes in this book are great, and it does a very good job of laying out the importance of protein, calcium, supplements, etc. That being said, I have a couple criticisms, one of which turned out to be pretty serious for our dog.First, although the book tells you how many milligrams of calcium to give your dog, and offers a measurement for eggshell (1 tsp), it doesn't even try to help you figure out how to measure the bone meal. We don't have a food scale, so we had to do some serious math by comparing the bone meal bag's information with the author's instructions, and it was a huge pain.Secondly, and much more seriously, the author does not mention that most dogs are highly lactose intolerant. Although she mentions giving different kinds of meat to your dog (e.g., liver, heart, etc.) in small amounts in order to gauge their tolerance, she doesn't ever mention the fact that most dogs aren't able to process dairy. Our dog had been fine with bits of cheese before, so we didn't think anything of it. As it turns out, cheddar cheese has a very low level of lactose. By contrast, yogurt, which is a central ingredient in nearly half of these recipes, has a very high level. After eating one serving from a recipe containing yogurt, our dog got very sick with diarrhea which lasted for approximately a week and required veterinary care. Although every dog is different, an author that so thoroughly and carefully warns the reader about so many other common pitfalls should know better than to stock half the book with dairy-based recipes and then not warn the reader about lactose intolerance. Ultimately, we've had to eliminate all of the dairy-based recipes, which renders about half of the book completely useless. The recipes are good, but I wish that so many of them didn't have dairy, particularly since - as I found out through further research - it's evidently a well known problem in the veterinary community.

Very well written, easy to use and my dogs love the meals!
I love preparing home cooked meals for my dogs and use this book regularly. I love that it has the amount of powdered calcium that I need to add to the food listed with each meal. I have 4 meals from this cookbook that I rotate regularly and occasionally prepare something different from this selection for them to have a great change. I have another pet cookbook but find that I don't use it and always use this as my go-to cookbook.

easy recipes with complete nutritional analysis!
There are lots of dog food recipe books out there... but few are complete with well cited nutritional information or recipe analysis. This one does a good job of making the recipes easy with a limited number of ingredients... and providing the nutritional breakdown. This is handy for feeding small breeds who only require a couple of hundred calories per day. Each recipe also contains a fact box with the "VET'S VIEW." The advice is often repetitive and simple (read: lazy). such as recommending leaving chicken skin on to boost fat content in recipes for active dogs. The same info is in several recipes. But overall, if you're starting to feed a homemade diet, I would definitely recommend including this book in your collection.

The Best Cookbook!
My three dogs have "delicate" (insert "barf a lot") systems so we decided to switch to home cooked meals for them. And we didn't want to spend more time or money than we have. After receiving this cookbook I may put the two humans in the home on this diet! Great easy recipes and happy, playful dogs without the return of their meals (insert "delicate" again). This is a must have cookbook for your dogs. Start with this book.

It's OK, but ....
I was somewhat disappointed with this book. It has recipes that can be useful, the binder format is really nice but I don't consider it a "first" book to buy for information relative to preparing your own pet foods. I liked the Whole Pet Diet much better and this could be a useful companion to it. Would I recommend it to others - maybe, depending on what stage of the process they were at.

Good enough for people!
What is so good about the dog cookbooks is giving our pooch the best veggies. When we lend out the books, most people respond, 'I didn't know my dog would eat vegetables!'Hey..in a pinch serve some to the kids!My husband said, 'Boy, that smells good!'We make enough for about three weeks, and freeze 'em!Take out about three days worth at a time, thaw in fridge.

The Healthy Dog Cookbook
This book is excellent with the high cost of nutritious dog foods and my being on a fixed income I wanted to give my dogs healthy foods as I give myself and thiis has several different recipes to choose from that are very nutritious and my dogs love. The only drawback is that you need to have the time to prepare them so I always make sure to have a bag of really nutritious food as a backup for when I don't have the time to make the food myself.

Love the recipes- book binding not so much
My 1 year old cavachon enjoys the recipes especially on the day that I cook (probably because it smells so good!) He's a bit picky on eating the leftovers on other days so I scaled the recipes down so that they don't make so many leftovers.I sprinkle a little bone meal powder in and add a capsule of omega 3-6-9 every other day plus give him a multi vitamin each day as well.My copy of the book wasn't made very well. The pages are bound with a sprial inside of the hard cover. Several of the pages stuck together where the holes were punched and I had to delicately peel them apart starting from the back of the book to the front in order not to rip them. Unfortunately a couple pages did tear before I figured out how to seperate them.

Much Better Dog Recipes Books Are Available
A book that was supposedly in good condition had 10 pages covered in scribble by a child. One recipe told you to use 900kg of mackerel fillets! Several of the main meal recipes used tinned fruit and also whole fat yoghurt. The recipes are for large amounts of food and not much guidance on what recipes can be safely frozen. Quite disappointed all round, not only with the book but also with the seller.
