We love the size and quality of this chess set! I would liked the pieces to be weighted a little more but they are huge!

This is a 20" wooden board of extremely high craftsmanship. A lot of times these folding boards sit funny when you put them down on a flat surface, but this one mitigates it and it lays completely flat. I challenge you to find the gap in the side profile of the center of the board. I can't even slide a sheet of paper in there when it's closed. The pieces are polymer but they look and feel like wood. I didn't even think they weren't wood until I looked at the listing again because they definitely don't feel cheap. The reverse/ inside of the folded board is green felt with spaces for each piece, including two queens.The pieces are weighted with felt bottoms and feel really good to play in hand. The king weighs 1.6oz and the pawns weigh 0.6oz each. King measures approximately 3.75" tall on squares measuring 2.25", really perfectly sized and weighted for OTB tournament play. They don't fall over easily, and plant down on the board with a satisfying felt muted thunk onto wood.If you only play online, I highly recommend picking up a good set and playing OTB. Your eyes and brain might work together well on a screen but there's something psychologically and physiologically significant that just clicks like the millennia old game this is when you physically pick up a well made weighted piece and move it on a physical board in front of you. You just get this spatial understanding that activates a different part of your brain when you're physically handling OTB play. I find it helps when studying chess before diving into daily puzzles to handle the pieces physically and play a dozen turns or so to get warmed up. And then of course, actually playing people IRL seems to build a different set of brain-body skills than just playing online.This set is gorgeous and fantastically made. If I had room for it, I would leave it out on display. It comes is a beautiful box, and is definitely giftable. Anybody receiving this would be wow'ed, if you are looking for a mind blowing gift for a chess player in your life. Five stars all the way.

Very High Quality – great design – perfect manufacturing – MISSING one Queen each playerThis chess set is made by craftsman who can be rightfully proud of their superior workmanship. All the parts were flawless so the manufacturer must have high Quality Control inspection standards. The board appears to be made of real wood. However, the classic design pieces are made of fake wood grain patterned injection molded synthetic plastic. The pieces are slightly weighted with Velvet covered bottoms. I do not like fake stuff. I would have preferred the pieces to be simply made of a solid light and dark color without any FAKE wood patterns. There is nothing at all wrong with making the pieces out of injection molded synthetic plastic. Plastic often times is the best material to use. This chess set is manufactured as close to Old World craftsmanship as you are going to get in this modern assembly line factory world.MISSING One Queen -Clearly the website designer who came up with the website description has 1)never played chess; and, 2)does not understand mathematics; and, 3)cannot even count up to three. Since the beginning of the game of chess there has been a piece called “the Queen” on each player's side. A full set of one player’s side color chess pieces will have ONE Queen. The website headline states, quoting verbatim, “2 Extra Queens”. Well doing Kindergarten counting: 1 Queen plus “2 Extra Queens” equals (1+2=3) for a total of 3 Queens that should have been included in the box. There were only 2 Queens, of one player’s side color, total included in the box. So the website headline should have stated: ONE Extra Queen. Or doing Kindergarten counting: 1 Standard Queen plus 1 Extra Queen equals (1+1=2) for a total of 2 Queens included in the box for each player’s side color.

Firstly, my biggest disappointment with this set is the poly-carbonate pieces, you don't buy a 'wooden' chess set, that then has a big old asterisk next to it, "High Polymer Weighted" Chess pieces. It can't be both, even if you're deceptive and use a hydro-dip simulated woodgrain 'paintjob' for the plastic to make it look handcrafted.Second, is just the massive size of this game board. I would rather have a static chess board, something as nice as this chess set deserves to be on display, but then that is really not what you want to do with a chess set that has cheap pot metal hardware fixtures on it. It's not an attractive chess set when the glaringly obvious plastic chess pieces, pot metal hinges and wood veneer. It just looks like it's made to look as though it's worth more than it actually is. There is no way I could justify the price for this item, not for travel, not for display.. If it was a 40 dollar chess set, then it would be perfect to keep in your game closet and get out for a game here and there.
