Identically flimsy, too pointy for toddlers, too cheap-looking for layouts aiming for realism
My train-obsessed son has more or less completed the transition now from wooden trains and Trackmaster to ‘proper’ Hornby stuff, complete with permanent landscaping and crafting. These tunnels fall a bit between two stools, and they’re not quite ideal for either the ‘baby stuff’ nor for the more grown-up modelling. For use with a wooden train set, they’re OK. They are the right scale to fit a Brio train on wooden track through (but not a Lego train), and they are obviously easy to plonk down and add to a scene. But they’re both a tiny bit fragile and a bit pointy on top, so I’d be wary of letting a toddler play with these in case they leant on them and hurt their hand, or fell on them and broke both themselves and the tunnel. They look oddly too realistic when placed on a toy set.Conversely though, they don’t feel like pieces for dedicated railway modellers either. For a start, there’s the fact they are visibly three copies from the same mould, so if you place more than one on a layout, it is obviously a repeat- and rotating one of them around by 180 degrees doesn’t fix that. The paintwork is an oddly specific ‘extreme mountain’ look that feels like it should tie in with an elevated narrow gauge mountain railway, yet the mouth of the tunnel is quite wide- more than a OO train needs, yet not wide enough for two OO tracks side-by-side. They could potentially form the basis of a more hands-on tunnel crafting project where they could be painted or moulded over to meld them more into the rest of the layout, but as instant scenery, they’re not perfect. While acknowledging that serious model railway kit is frustratingly expensive, the current asking price of thirteen quid for three identical pieces of painted moulded plastic still seems very steep, especially considering that in the three-pack I got, there’s some slightly poor quality finishing on some of the edges, which needed to be sandpapered off before they were ready to use.Unless you have a very particular reason why these tunnels are the absolutely perfect addition to your layout, I’d suggest that they might not be a good move.
