Bleak, moving, often bizarre but fantastic book
Despite the sudden jumps in plot from chapter to chapter everything came together beautifully and it was a beautifully moving and sad book. Highly recommend.

Wondrous & moving
This is a truly wondrous, fantastical, moving, even melancholy book. The author quite handily takes the current pandemic and creates one of his own, one that is very much more dangerous than Covid-19. Each chapter deals with how various people, in California and Japan, deal with the on-going pandemic and the terrible tragedies in its wake. Each chapter is compelling and the characters are drawn with great humanity and empathy. The final chapters are superbly lyrical, and we discover where and how the virus came about. Safe to say that, wherever Covid originated, it was nowhere near as magical as the virus in this book.Very highly recommended.

A lot of death
I bought this book because of the praise and the awards it received.A story with changing characters that are intertwined somehow in later stories/chapters.The connections are direct, you can remember their connections without much thinking. The main plot circles around the plague and what it does to the people and the survivors/uninfected.Well, the world takes it pretty well without unrest. Also climate change as a second problem is neatly shoved in your face on every occasion possible. And in the end it is a two-way finish, trying to wrap up the story with some added deus-ex-machina together with hints and clues in stories before you can only discover when you know the end.I enjoyed reading it, it provoked some thoughts about life, death and what to to with my life and how I would react in certain situations. The characters are plausible, their development is stringent and nicely done. But after finishing it, I lost interest in thinking more about it.Like a new meal in my favourite restaurant that was nice, but will not be ordered again, because it just was not good enough in the end.

This book will haunt you for the rest of your life.
Fantastic writing of a unique and epic plot. I have given this book as gifts to many friends and recommended it to a lot of readers. I do not recommend reading it on a tropical beach vacation-it is so enthralling, yet sad, that it will ruin your trip.
