Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery: From the Lab to the Operating Room - An International Approach

An enjoyable summer read
This text has plugged a major gap in the market for rhinology textbooks. Until recently, there was only Wormalds text which is a surgical manual rather than a rhinology text as such. The other rhinology texts I felt were out-dated and I was very happy to get my hands on Georgalas's and Fokkens Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery. It is well written, updated with the latest guidelines and a nice mixture of the theoretical and the practical. Georgalas and Fokkens have written many of the chapters themselves which lends a coherence to the book that I find is often missing in large medical tomes. There is a nice feature where each chapter has a number of 'top tips' spread throughout the chapter, directing the readers attention to key points, which for the reader short of time, could read in 1-2 hours; difficult to see how someone with an interest in rhinology could make better use of a timeframe normally reserved for watching a single episode of 'The Biggest Loser'. There is a useful DVD with 78 different videos, though I find it difficult to swap between mediums when I am reading, I prefer to read first and watched the videos after I finished the book. As a general ENT surgeon with a reasonable rhinology practice, I enjoyed the basic science section (satisfying some of my natural curiosities). Of course the rhinitis/sinusitis section is the meat of the book (and would work as a sinusitis text in its own right), but there is a good (100 page) rhinoplasty section also, with a good chapter by Roxana Cobo, (always one of my favourite rhinoplasty speakers at international rhinoplasty meetings). I read the last section on skull base surgery (200 pages), which I will not be doing personally, but I feel a sense of satisfaction (and strangely some sense of vicarious pride) on been updated on the boundaries that are been pushed by our adventurous colleagues. Keep going guys. You are nearly out the other side!

This is by far the best Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery book ever published
This is by far the best Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery book ever published. Full of outstanding colour figures and written by international authorities in the field it is a 'must have' for every Otorhinolaryngologist - Head and Neck Surgeon - both trainees and Consultants - and medical school library. It covers all aspects including detailed step-by-step surgical steps as well as a CD with beautiful videos of all surgical steps.

Looking for a Rhinology textbook? This is the one!
This is the most up-to-date, evidence-based book in rhinology. Its quality is supported by authors' academic and surgical experience at tertiary referral center. Book sections cover all fields in rhinology (from rhinoplasty to skull base), are written with citations from the most recent peer-reviewed articles and put forward the standard of care.DVD with surgery videos also met all my (high) expectations. This makes "Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery" the first option when buying a book for rhinology study or updating.
