easily the most important expose of the last 30+ years
Ari Ben Menashe's explosive story about the US-Israeli arms pipeline to Iran in the 1980s has never been accorded the importance it deserves. Twenty years after it was published in 1992, the book remains a sleeper. This is unfortunate. Had its true importance been recognized at the time of its release -- the guilty (HW Bush et al) might have been held accountable. In which case we would have been spared many of the horrors of recent years.I only came to value Profits of War through my continuing research and study into 9/11. The book must be read multiple times to fully appreciate the implications of Ben Menashe's story.Confirmation has come from surprising places. For example, Bob Gates inadvertently confirms Ben Menashe in his own 1996 memoir, From the Shadows. Ben Menashe had fingered Gates as the key man at CIA who helped coordinate the secret Israeli arms channel to Iran that started in 1981 -- the result of the October Surprise: Casey and Bush's secret deal with the Iranians concluded in October 1980 that cost Jimmy Carter a second term and put Ronald Reagan in the White House.Casey and Bush did what Carter refused to do: They traded arms for hostages. With a proviso: Casey insisted that the US embassy hostages must remain in captivity until AFTER Reagan's presidential inauguration. In his memoir Gates writes (p 199) that in 1981 he was "closer to Casey than anyone else at CIA or in government." During this period Gates served as Casey's chief of staff. Gates also writes (p 222) that he "sat in on virtually all of his [Casey's] meeting..." Which of course means that Gates had to know about the treasonous nature of Casey and Bush's secret deal with the Iranians -- and the arms pipeline that started in March 1981.Thus, Gates by his own admission was in the loop on even the most sensitive issues. Who else would Casey have turned to -- if not Gates -- to handle this most sensitive issue of all? The secret arms deals with Iran via the Israelis.Gates also confirms Ben Menashe on another point. He affirms the role of Israeli Mossad agent David Kimche in the arms pipeline. My respect for Ari Ben Menashe has grown steadily in recent years. Like Terry Reed, who exposed the illegal CIA arms/drugs pipeline to the Contras out of Mena, AR in his 1995 book Compromised, Ben Menashe became a fugitive from his own government. The Israelis tried to frame him and put him in prison to discredit him. But Ben Menashe beat them in court and walked away a free man -- though an exile in perpetuity. His testimony has been confirmed multiple times by many sources. His story needs to be heard today -- more than ever.

Refreshing!!!
I am flabber-gasted at the memory of Ari and his attention to detail. I believe the story to be true and I wonder if the arms smuggling and the backdoor dealings are still going on. He is a very fortunate man to be alive, during his escapades, and after when penning this story. Apparently all the deals that Bush and Reagan put together with drug money were true. Big W walked away scot- free. I wonder........

one of the best books I've ever read
This is one of the best books I've ever read. The authors memory is just stunning, as I assume when he was writing this he didn't have any of the documents to refer to. This book details the devious games governments around the world are up to while unsuspecting citizens pick some political party and rally around their politician, meanwhile they are trading millions of lives constantly and easily as mere political capital.

Super Interesting
An amazing story by an amazing person, story seems pretty credible by most of it. Shed light to a very dark world of espionage and arms trade, it is a cynical side of a world that we mostly revere as glamorous.

Mixed Feelings...
For those who are interested in MidEast affairs (as myself) this covers a fascinating topic and is written in a fluid style, which adds up to a truly gripping read. The only reason for which I am not awarding this book 5 stars (and were it possible 6 or 7 stars) is the fact that many of the claims are indeed extreme...Too much of the book simply adds up to bill this as complete fiction. Several other books (amongst which "The Samson Option", written by a renown journalist) have been based on Ben-Menashe's knowledge. Investigations have sprung up in the US and in Australia. Of course, these haven't lead far, but this is a serious case of the poeple in power charged with investigating the people in power - so what would you really expect?Whilst I was reading this book I kept my copy of "Israels Secret Wars" at hand to verify events, facts and dates, and together with a bit of searching around the net, the essence of it all seems to add up.Right from the start the author makes his embitterment with the "system" clear, so accusing him of having an axe to grind is pretty lame - add to that the fact that amongst his sworn enemies (at the end) was the media mogul R. Maxwell (who unleashed the full weight of his media empire to destroy his credibility) and you end up without much of a case...****************************TO SUM IT UP: You have to be deeply cynical, but alas perhaps realistic, to accept all that is stated in this book. In the end, however, I am one who believes that where there's smoke, there's got to be some fire as well, and this book discloses a hell of a lot of smoke!

Revealing, to say the least
This book provides insights, from someone who was deep inside the system, into the Machiavellian workings of governments.Though the events described here now are a little outdated, they nonetheless are connected to current developments. One of the things that has changed, since then, is the sophistication of technology. The capabilities of Promis spy software in the 1980s already was terrifying. We can only imagine the powers that governments have now. This book is nothing if not sobering.
