Former College and NFL Referee and now Fox Sports consultant on College and Pro calls has written a book describing his start his career and his role as V.P. of NFL officiating and the development of many rule changes in the NFL. You will gain insight on the life of an NFL official , their number, salary and general lack of respect from fans, coaches and NFL executives. Pereira claims that excessive whining will be the downfall of officiating .Constant whining from players, coaches and uniformed fans has led many to not consider officiating as something they would like to do. Controversial plays that led to rule changes as well as the development of challenges of calls are explained in detail. The authors relationship with his father, coaches , players and fellow officials are explored as well as the authors cancer diagnosis. If you are a Referee or have ever been one, you will enjoy this book and more than likely agree with the authors opinions. If you are a football fan you will find this an informative and interesting read regarding the development and role of the third team on the field. If you are a fan who likes to yell at the ref all the time, if you don't have the nerve to try it yourself, read this book and you may feel compelled to think before you yell, read the rulebook or better yet watch the author on Fox and he will clearly explain it for you. Recommended.

A comprehensive look at life as a referee
... through the eyes of someone who has done it all in that field. Mike recounts his personal story about what led him down this road, and reveals a lot about himself, his family, his occupation and the game of football. He gives you the view from the field, from the head office and from in front of the camera. He takes you through key moments and plays in NFL history that helped shape future rule changes. You'll learn how officials are trained, judged and compensated, and you'll get his unfiltered opinions on the people and issues surrounding the NFL. Yes, its a little repetitive in spots, but that's a small price to pay for such a unique perspective on the game.

AFTER FURTHER, FURTHER REVIEW. . . . .
Full disclosure: I have known the author for many years. His book is genuine, much like he is. Pereira didn't hesitate to name names in his telling of his days in the National Football League office. It is obvious throughout the book that officiating, proper officiating, remains his passion to this day. If you want to know pro football officiating from the inside out, this book's definitely for you.

Interesting Read
Interesting read on the life of a football official, but sometimes just a little boring with the endless acecdotal stories about some of the more controversial plays in NFL History. However, a true football aficionado would probably appreciate all of those stories. Well written and enjoyable.
