The Bass Line Book: Downes Mike (Advance Music)

Very useful book for jazz bass beginners. Great musical paterns, with walking bass lines and various other rhythms. I can’t recommend this book enough.

First, I should say I am not a beginner bassist and this book would probably not be the best for that individual. I understand chord construction and have reasonable grasp of functional harmony and can more or less read notation. Not all of these things are essential for this book, but if you come with a little experience this book will pay off almost immediately (if you do the work). I literally have about 17 other books which tackle jazz bass in some form or the other and I find this one to be the most complete. I've only just started working through it and am excited to follow through. I can't say that about most of the books I've purchased.

Dedicato esclusivamente all'accompagnamento, non è un testo per principianti: si richiede una buona lettura, una discreta tecnica di base (diciamo almeno terzo/quarto anno di conservatorio) e ovviamente una sufficiente conoscenza della lingua inglese. Con queste premesse, è un libro incredibilmente solido e completo per quello che si propone, particolarmente interessanti le trascrizioni comparate dei grandi contrabbassisti sul blues e i rhythm changes. Se avete cominciato a suonare jazz ma siete ancora pieni di dubbi riguardo a cosa fare o non fare (com'è normale) questo libro vi accompagnerà per mano fino a raggiungere una notevole solidità di base. L'unico difetto è la rilegatura, del tutto inadatta ad un libro che deve stare su un leggio, una rilegatura ad anelli sarebbe stata molto più indicata.
