Flight Craft 5: Sukhoi Su-15: The 'Boeing Killer'

A good solid book about the Su-15
I brought this book about the Su-15 hoping for something similar to Sergey Burdin’s books about the TU-128 and TU-22. After reading Yefim Gordon’s and Dmitriy Komissarov’s work on the Su-15, the book does provide a good, concise overview of the development of the Su-15 and its main variants, along with describing some of the action seen by the aircraft’s in-Service use by the PVO (including touching on the two Korean airliner incidents that involved the Su-15). The book also contains an interesting section on experimental/testbed versions of the Su-15 (the description of how the Su-15 was used as an in-flight refuelling systems testbed for air-to-air refuelling being particularly interesting in my-opinion). A single page description of un-built projects that were either based on or derived from the Su-15 is also included in the book. Whilst all of this was very interesting, the problem was that after completing the book, as a reader, it just left me wanting more information on these aspects of the aircraft and more background information putting the aircraft into context, both historically and operationally. A good example of this relates to the Su-15s’ service with the FA. The book explains why the Su-15 was transferred to the FA and then simply explains almost as a fait accompli that it was no good as a strike aircraft all in space of one paragraph. Therefore, if you are looking for a good solid overview of this aircraft, then this is the book for you, but if you are looking for a highly detailed, in-depth description of the Su-15, its systems and use by the PVO, you may find it a little lacking.Considering the positive aspects of the book, it is packed with good quality black-and-white and colour photos which shows the aircraft in its entirety from various different angles, along with plenty of detail photos (including the cockpit). The book also contains ten pages of colour side views of the aircraft that shows the markings and colour schemes applied to the Su-15 by the PVO, FA and Ukrainian Air Force. Also included are a number of side view line drawings and three view line drawings of the Su-15 and Su-15TM. When all of this is combined with the information in “Modeller’s Corner” section of the book, it is likely that this would be an extremely good reference book for someone who is looking to model the Su-15.In conclusion, if you are looking for a book that provides a good, comprehensive overview of the Su-15’s development, or a good starting point from which to read further about the Su-15 then this book is worth having. Similarly, if you are looking for information on the aircraft because you want to model it, then this book is also probably worth getting. However, if you are looking for (or possibly expecting) something along the same lines as Sergey Burdin’s books about the TU-128 and TU-22, then this book on the Su-15 may be a little lacking.

Excellent Photography, Text of SU-15
I've always loved the looks of this plane - long, delta wing, sleek. Su-15 was designed for one thing - intercept US Bombers and shoot them down. They weren't built in huge numbers, less than 1300 of them and only the Soviet Air Force used them during the Cold War. This plane shot down KAL007 South Korean Boeing 747 killing 269 people on 9/1/83.As for the book - author Yefim Gordon is the most prolific and knowledgeable writer on Russian aviation. 96 pages on high glossy paper, excellent color & B&W photos of the plane, color line drawings to show the cammo schemes & markings. Perfect for modelers. Indeed, the last chapter, similar to the Detail and Scale series, has a review of different models of the Su-15 along with reviews of each kit. This book is an excellent supplement to Yefim Gordon's early work OKB Sukhoi: A History of the Design Bureau and its Aircraft and I highly recommend it to all aviation enthusiasts. Bel volume
