Recorded live at the Santa Monica Pier in 1996, this is the first Dick Dale live album to be released since 1965.First time out on vinyl, songs include Let's Go Trippin , The Wedge and Miserlou. You never really know just how appropriate the nickname King of the Surf Guitar is until you see Dick Dale play live. The power of Dick's technique is the sound he invented, the harder edge style of playing surf music that others imitated but never quite duplicated. No other player and no other group from that era can claim that kind of pioneering style and showmanship.Six decades into his career, Dick Dale the king of the surf guitar, continues to dazzle. This is a rare recording, one to treasure as Dale's performance on this evening was perfect. Recorded in 1996, the spirits of Surf music past and present were alive and well in Southern California, playing all his signature songs including a cranked up version of Miserlou. An essential collection of guitar wizardry, from the undisputed king of the surf guitar.

Great show, but seems like a bootleg...
This claims to be an "orignal soundboard recording" but I have my doubts. On both discs the bass and guitar come through well enough, but the drums sound like someone's playing cardboard boxes in a closet. Add in the dubiously loud crowd noise between songs (some of it just as loud or louder than when Dick Dale himself speaks into the mic) and the mono sound and "bootleg" seems like a solid conclusion. Its a shame too, as both shows on here are great. His commercial peak may have been in the 60's, but the 90's were a great decade for Dick Dale, and his music, IMHO, never sounded better. This release has a great setlist of his best stuff, and its all played with great energy including some fun jam moments (I love both of the live "Miserlou" performances). Dale is truly a guitar legend. But I can't give it higher marks with sound this lo-fi. Shame they didn't have a better source for these two shows.

Surf's up
This release has been a long time coming. Finally, you're able to hear Dale's modern output like the excellent "Nitro" in a live setting. The great old stuff is also represented like "Miserlou" and "Let's go Trippin". The band is great and Dale's guitar comes through clear and strong but the overall sound quality is slightly lo-fi. Well worth it though. Try to see him live.

Surf guitar at its very best!
What can I say? Dick Dale is just amazing and this live recording from a few years ago reflects his live performances (I have been to many) very well.
