Samsung Portable SSD T5 250 GB USB 3.1 External SSD

I run a couple of Late 2013 Apple iMac 21.5” desktops. For those that don’t already know, these use 5400rpm traditional SATA-based hard drives. They run at a speed, at least by today’s standards, equivalent to a one legged racehorse competing in the Grand National.I tried getting a few local companies to quote for replacing the SATA drive with an internal SSD. I also run an Apple MacBook Pro with an SSD and wanted to get closer to its performance. I was already well aware of the difference an SSD can make over a traditional ‘mechnical’ Hard drive. Switching between the MacBook Pro with the SSD and the iMac with the old drive had become akin to getting out of a Ferrari or McLaren and being told to drive 300 miles in a 1970’s Austin Maxi.To say my iMacs have been transformed into completely different machines would be an understatement. What’s more, it is a fast operation and the Samsung T5 is small, compact, light and an absolute breeze to configure without the risk of taking a PC/Mac apart.The latter is what prompted me to opt for an external drive - risk. Why take a machine to bits and risk obliterating it when a drive like this can give you 90% of the performance of an internal drive in the real-world?The Samsung T5 is neatly boxed and comes with a two connectors. Type C to USB and Type C to Type C. Because the iMac 21.5” is a 2013 model, I knew I’d have to use the Type C to USB connector but that wasn’t an issue because the iMac has USB 3.0 so I would still be able to get transfer speeds up to the maximum capacity offered by the T5 drive (I was looking to get anywhere between 400mbps to 480mbps).Plug the T5 into the Mac (or PC) and format it (on the Mac this has to be formatted in OS Extended Journal mode with GUID Partioning). This took around 4 hours due to the perhistoric speeds of the 5400rpm SATA drive creating a bottleneck.I cloned the Mac SATA hard drive using the trial version of Carbon Copy Cloner (i.e. free).I then used Utilities/Start Up disk in System Preferences to change the Start Up (Boot) disk to the Samsung.Before the upgrade I took a number of timings of the performance of the iMac so that I could reasonably judge the impact of the SSD, just in case it was negligible (it was never going to be!) and not visible to the naked eye in normal operation.Here is the impact:Under the old drive, I was obtaining around 90mbps read/write speed. On the new drive, that is now around 320mbps/425mpbs.Boot time on the old drive was around 1 minute 40 seconds. It is now 29 seconds at the very most.Microsoft Word, first time loading, was over a minute on the old drive (running the latest Office365 version for Mac). It is now, wait for it, 4 seconds. Yes, 4 seconds.Excel has gone from 40 seconds to 3.5 seconds. PowerPoint has dropped from 42 seconds to 3.7 seconds.Outlook, which I run for 8 mailboxes (some Exchange on Office 365, a few on Gmail, etc), was taking over a minute to load. That is now down to 6 seconds.The ‘spinning wheel’ when the Mac used to wait for things to happen has disappeared completely. I haven’t seen it once since the upgrade. General use of the Mac is completely different. It is slick, fast, without delay and effortless when browsing the web. In fact it is general operating that you’ll notice the real transformation on your machine. You realise how much of a bottleneck the old SATA drives can create and what an immediate impact a decent SSD can have.I would give one caveat when looking to buy a traditional SSD - check to see if your machine has a connection that is greater than USB 2.0 speeds if you’re thinking to using the SSD as your Start Up drive. USB 2.0 can kill a machine in terms of operating speeds and you really need to be running USB 3.0, Type C or a faster than USB 2.0 connection. Also, have a look at an M.2 SSD (the latest incarnation of solid state drives) and see if your connection could give you the benefit of running the even faster speeds that they give. It is likely that you’ll need to buy an M.2 SSD and an external enclosure kit though as few seem to be available as an all-in-one option.If you’re wanting to transform a SATA based PC/Mac speed-wise, this is your best bet. Yes, you could throw extra RAM at it but that is going to mean digging around inside it. Nothing, in my experience, will have the impact that SATA to SSD upgrading will. It is light and day, chalk and cheese, or whatever other comparison phrase you want to throw at it.The Samsung T5 is smaller than an Apple Magic Mouse II (photograph shown for reference) and I have simply Velcro-mounted it to the back of the Mac’s supporting stand as shown in the other photographs.It is a neat, simple, super-fast and low-cost solution that will have the end result of making you think you’ve got a brand new machine.Buy it.

I bought this for my Xbox one, I have a first generation Xbox and bought this for pubg as loading and rendering of pubg can be pretty bad sometimes, now I have pubg loaded onto this my loading times are much faster, a lot of the time I load into games quicker than my mates Xbox one X, I can see guns before I've even landed.It's a small, yet fairly heavy piece of kit (which I like). It gives it a good feel of the build quality, definitely worth it for gaming, my mate now wants one haha

Bought this for use with the hardware encryption feature. It has the software on the drive itself, which is easy to install. It still seems quite fast when encrypted, which is an advantage from the hardware encryption features (as opposed to other drives which simply have your PC do all the work encrypting it so it will be slower). AES256 is a good standard for encryption. Not particularly expensive given the small size and hardware encryption feature. It's nice that they include both kinds of cables (USB to USB-C and USBC to USB-C)Update: tested with encryption on windows 10 and Android (used play store app), worked well on both

This little box is an SSD box with a difference - easy to carry about, and connect with all my work on different computers, I can be sure of my content travelling with me, even if I don't take my computer home. It also helps with backing up, so I don't need to rely on the cloud. Light and easy to connect to USB and USC connections, expands my available memory on my laptop, so I have plenty of room to spare for my own content. Well worth the expense for my small business.

Bought for my Xbox one X, Fast and easy to install and works great (tip for new buyers for use on Xbox One is to make sure your Xbox one is on it's home screen when you plug in the SSD and follow it's prompts)

Transformed my Mac Mini 2012,halved boot time and just made everything quicker. Need to point out that the loaded software / file format is not Mac friendly ( i.e. not reliable as a boot drive). Probably ok as a back up drive but this would surely be overkill using a SSD! For Mac use you will have to re-format/set partition table/download driver software from Samsung.I used Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable drive from my Mac HDD with no issues at all.Bit of a faff but great results, much quicker,quieter and runs less hot.

Purchased this for faster loading times on Xbox One and it works perfectly, fast and simple to format and a great price (much cheaper than upgrading to a One X)

Very surprised at the speed improvement, compared to working over the networked NAS, internal drives & external 7200 rpm HDD. Works well with iMac & macbook. Surprising how tiny it is. Good that it contains usb3 & usb-c cables. Very worthwhile purchase.

Ich verwende in meinem PC eine 1 TB HDD und eine 250 GB SSD. Auf Letzterer befindet sich das Betriebssystem (Windows 10) und meine Adobe Suite. Da wurde der Platz leider schon ganz schön eng. Bis dato hatte ich noch mein Lieblingsspiel (Total War: Warhammer) auf der SSD, da ich das oft spiele und die häufigen Ladebalken auf der HDD bis zu fünf Mal so lange brauchten. Bei Updates reichte nun der Platz teils nicht mehr aus, und es kommt ja nun bald Total War: Warhammer 2. Keine Chance, das noch auf die SSD zu bekommen. Mehr Speicherkapazität musste also her, und bitte als SSD, denn auf Ladebalken zu Starren ist halt meh.Nach einigem Überlegen entschied ich mich gegen eine interne SSD, da ich für verschiedene Projekte von den Vorteilen einer mobilen Lösung profitieren kann, und die Entscheidung fiel nach, zugeben, recht kurzer Recherche auf die Samsung MU-PA250B T5. Gottseidank.Angenehm wenig Umverpackung, und dann das erste Mal große Augen: die Packung ist ja winzig, wie soll denn da eine externe Festplatte reinpassen? Ich hatte das Werbebild mit der Hand nicht gesehen und dachte, ich bekomme noch so ein Ding zum Aufstellen...und dann mach ich die Packung auf und sehe, dass die Platte nicht mal ein Viertel der Packungsgröße hat.Ich war sofort verliebt.Die Packung selbst enthält die Platte (so! Mini!), eine Anleitung, und zwei Kabel (USB C auf C und USB C auf A), das war's. Platte angesteckt, Windows 10 erkennt diese sofort, keine weiteren Fragen. Windows 10 vergibt auch automatisch jedes Mal den gleichen Laufwerksbuchstaben. Läuft bei uns. Und Samsung. Noch per vorinstallierter Samsung Software einen Namen und ein Passwort vergeben, fertig.Meine Güte, ist die Platte schick und winzig. Und absolut unhörbar. Das Einzige, das im abendlichen Raum zu hören ist, sind gelegentliche, glückselige Jauchzer meinerseits darüber, wie mini süß diese Platte ist. "Wie Du", sag ich zu meiner Frau dann. Sie lässt mich dann wissen, dass diese Platte aber nicht annähernd so effektiv ist wie sie. Na, wo sie Recht hat...!Ach ja, der Praxis-Test: ich hab's nicht so mit technischen Daten, aber ich kann sagen: das erste Installieren von Total War: Warhammer hat unglaublich lange gedauert. Steam hat bestimmt 20 Minuten gebraucht, um den Speicherplatz auf der SSD zu reservieren. Ob das nun daran liegt, dass Steam nicht so gut mit externen Platten kann (also, keine Ahnung ob das so ist, aber könnte ja sein, oder? ^^), oder ob es einfach nur so war, weil es das erste Mal war, dass etwas auf der neuen Platte installiert wurde...ich weiß es leider nicht.Das Installieren selbst ging dann aber blitzschnell. Beim Spielen selbst merke ich keinen Unterschied zur vorherigen Installation auf der internen SSD. Die Ladezeiten zwischen bestimmten Spielszenen sind mindestens ebenso kurz wie zuvor, mir kommt es hier und da sogar nochmal etwas flotter vor (meine SSD im Rechner ist ja auch schon über 2 Jahre alt). Das ist sicher nicht sehr technisch, aber ich habe über 500 Spielstunden in TW:Warhammer investiert. Man darf mir glauben, dass ich merke, wenn die Wartezeit auf eine fette Echtzeit-Schlacht länger dauert :-DIch bin unterm Strich wirklich extrem zufrieden - die Platte ist extrem unkompliziert zu verwenden, sieht schick aus (sie ist so mini-winzig, aaaah!!!!!) und ist richtig schnell, und noch dazu unhörbar. Sie ist mit - Zeitpunkt September 2017 - knapp 140 Euro nun auch wahrlich kein Schnäppchen. Dafür ist sie ein "Oooh" und "Aaaah" Garant, wenn man sie Bekannten zeigt :) Außerdem investiere ich lieber ein paar Euro mehr und hab dann was Gescheites, und ich behaupte mal, das ist hier der Fall.Uneingeschränkte Kaufempfehlung, und das erste Mal seit sehr Langem, dass ich einem Produkt volle 5 Sterne verleihe.

Ich bin vollkommen zufrieden. Die Festplatte ist sehr kompakt und handlich. Die Geschwindigkeit ist gut und reicht für jede normale Nutzung problemlos aus. Ich nutze die Festplatte für Backups von meinen Daten, sollte der PC mal abschmieren. Die Speicherkapazität reicht mir hierfür aus. Wie viel Speicherkapazität man braucht, muss jeder entsprechend seinen Bedürfnissen wissen. Wie bei jedem Speichermedium ist natürlich nicht die ganze angegebene Speicherkapazität nutzbar. Das ist aber immer so und dürfte bekannt sein.Interessant wäre die Langzeitnutzungserfahrung, dh ob die Daten auch noch nach mehreren Jahren oder Jahrzehnten lesbar sind und das Gerät noch funktioniert. Dies wird die Zeit zeigen. Ich habe mein Vertrauen in eine SSD und in Samsung gesetzt.

Ce SSD externe est certainement la référence de genre de produits. très compact et très solide. Très rapide également et facile d'usage avec macOS Linux et autres...Je l'utilise sur mon iMac, en complément du SSD interne. Avantage principal : aucun bruit et aussi rapide que le SSD interne. Je l'ai formaté en HFS+ (le format APFS n'est pas supporté) et vraiment aucun souci.A noter, si on le formate en HFS+ on peut en faire un volume Time Machine.En conclusion : cher mais excellent et très adapté à ce que je veux en faire

Ce disque est minuscule mais très efficace, il est livré avec un connecteur USB 2 et un connecteur USB 3.Je l'utilise pour enregistrer les programmes ou le time shifting sur Freebox Delta car les disques internes 2.5 pouces en raid 10 provoquent des gels d'images.
