Not terrible, but...
The secret diary. Not terrible, it does do what it says it should but it does also have a few flaws. The speech recognition took about an HOUR to get to work. Password after password it just wouldn't complete this. In the end we had to change to an easier word so it could understand. This really frustrated my daughter (6) who nearly gave up on the product. It was only because I persevered that she continued.Does it get used, no. It's just another toy that sits in a corner. Honestly it isn't a great product. The speech really does let it down. You can't play the games because you can't get passed naming anything. I have given it 3 stars because if it works, it would be a good toy, and it is a good idea. It just needs updating and better technology.

Good present choice.
I brought this for a family member who is 6 after they spotted it in the argos book and wanted it for their birthday. It was over 10£ cheaper on here than the RRP.I was not expecting much from this product but I had a little play around with it while it was in the box before hand and I was surprised at how bright and good quality the screen is. Of course 'good quality' for a kids toy, I am not comparing it to expensive adult gadgets like our phones or televisions! There is more to it than just writing in your diary. There are different modes / games. The reciever loves the toy and it is currently used daily before bed. It comes out for only 10 minutes but it is very much enjoyed. She sees it as being very grown up getting to 'write' in her diary before bed.Money well spent.

Daughter enjoys this for the unicorn pet and the odd diary entry
Our daughter had this for her 5th birthday. She was very excited and knew what it was instantly.Setting up the facial recognition was easy at first, though because we were in a different environment (darker) we had to reset this in our lighter home for it to work properly.Thankfully, pressing the reset button to redo the picture for unlocking under the battery compartment does not wipe all the data including diary entries and unicorn progress etc.The door does open in order for you to enter the pass code to unlock, which is 4 digits. It would be nice if you didn't have to wait for the camera not to recognise you before waiting for the door to unlock in order to enter the code. I think its too long of a wait before you can bypass the camera option. It takes about 20 seconds.Oddly the unicorn seems to sleep right when we are awake in the mornings so we had to set the time 2 hours ahead in order for it to be awake. When it sleeps you cannot do anything with it. So frustration sets in - hence changing the time on the diary. So apart from those oddities it works very well. Like the other devices in this range/price point the camera is a bit naff. It's poor in low light and when you look at the pictures on a computer/tablet they are of very poor quality. It is to be expected. We added a memory card for saving pictures and other bits to. We also had some music added to this card for playing. The sound is ok actually from the small speaker. Our daughter enjoys adding a diary entry with an emoticon, weather and some writing. Since it has a qwerty keyboard it is good for children to learn the position of the keys/letters.The lights are a nice touch but they only just illuminate in random patterns. The games are good, similar to other VTech devices. There is the dressing room & photo edition option too but I have not fully got to grips with that yet. There is a fair few features to delve into to keep children interested.Since there isn't a detailed manual it's a bit of guess work finding out all the keys and options. It was a day or so before we realised there was a back button for instance.Saying that there is a voice that helps you and guides you through the options that are available. There is background music playing whilst the unit is unlocked. You can turn this off. As usual the batteries supplied are worth changing straight away with a decent set since ours lasted just a few hours before it showed a low battery warning and failed to stay on.Our daughter found that there is an integrated stand to allow the device to stand up in portrait mode.Overall it is a nice toy with several features. I hope it will be used for many months before being left in a corner :)

My granddaughter loved it
My granddaughter loved her secret diary. After using it for a month, it developed a fault on the screen which made it difficult to see clearly.I contacted Amazon, who arranged for me to return the faulty diary and delivered a replacement the next day.Brilliant customer service.

Good Fun
At first I didn’t want to get this as my 7 year old already had a vtech diary however she insisted on this from Santa & I have to say I’m impressed. It’s definitely an upgrade from the Secret Safe one. Lights up, has a much more interactive pet to play with plus lots of games and we have lots of fun with the selfie/picture/video and my daughter loves the face recognition. Highly recommend this. I think from around age 6 to perhaps 9.

Great for car journeys as portable
Bought as a stocking filler but the box was all dented . Nice size for little hands and easy to use . Our grandaughter enjoys playing with it when she’s in the car on long journeys . Didn’t seem to be the best quality but was worth the money we paid as other places were charging £8-£10 more .

A good toy for a limited time
My daughter loved it but only when she could get into it through the voice recognition. We had to disable this eventually as it was very annoying.A bit of a fad product to be honest. She used and carried it around for days and then it was relegated to the bottom of the pile as she has reverted to good old fashioned pen and paper.
