Who is stealing Mr. Silverton's pheasants?
Meet Dan Carter, Brad Wilber (Den Chief) and the rest of Den 2 cub scouts from the town of Webster City which is located near a river. After camping in the rain and all thoroughly fed up, the cubs are excited when Mr. Hatfield (one of the den dad's) suggests a hike to Mr. Silverton's pheasant farm. Having not been able to reach Mr. Silverton by phone, they decide to still continue with their plans. Once across the river, and on the trail through the property, they are surprised to meet a very hostile Saul Dobbs, foreman at the farm. In fact, he is so hostile that he even shows the cubs that he is armed!Having finally gained permission from Mr. Silverton along with strict instructions to keep to the trails and NOT to go into certain areas, the cubs try to visit again. Two of the boys mistakenly leave the trail and find some pheasant feathers to make an Indian Headdress. However, when Mr. Silverton is told by Saul Dobbs that a webelo badge was found at the sight of some dead pheasants, the cubs are immediately suspected of foul play and Mr. Silverton refuses to listen to them.Knowing that they are innocent, the boys wonder who is stealing the birds? Why is there a man-made dam across the river that is safe to walk across? Who is using the old logging road at night? When the rain continues and the river starts flooding will the boys and a den dad finally be able to convince Mr. Silverton of their innocence and the fact that there is criminal activity going on at the farm? Will they be able to save the pheasants from drowning? What about the real perpetrators? Will they get away or will justice be done?A well-written, clean, sometimes suspenseful story, that is sure to thrill all young boys and even some girls. We are reading the stories aloud so the whole family is enjoying them. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED from our house to yours!
