This is a beautiful book filled with creative activities for exploring nature in your own backyard or nearby park. When my 7-year-old flipped through the book, he found at least five or six different activities he really wanted to try. His favorite was the "bug pooter" so that's what we started with. We were able to construct it with items we already had on hand at home. It worked better than I expected! He managed to "poot" a small millipede. Next, we plan to try making a scent trail and looking for bite marks on acorns.Some of the ideas are quite straightforward, like picking up a daddy longlegs, catching a frog, or flipping rocks and logs to look for salamanders, but even these easy activities are paired with interesting science and nature facts.I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to help kids connect with nature or develop an even deeper understanding of the living things all around us.

If your child is interested in nature or you want to foster such an interest, this is an indispensable and very informative/entertaining reference work. The book is chock full of exciting outdoor activities for your budding naturalist. We especially enjoyed the section on how to throw a moth party and think this would be a great activity for kids. The bug sweep also looks like fun and the bug "pooter" is really clever. The animal tracking projects are also really great and as an adult, I plan to try these this winter.

My grand daughters were barely out of the bookstore and in the car with this book before they were totally immersed. The 10 year old read the prologue to the 7 year old, they both were so into it! Then after spending some time with the book by herself, the 10 year old said " this book is pretty cool". I call that a winner! Thanks Susie for giving this to the world!
