Heavy into producing timber for sale but still has some good points
I wanted a book to tell me what to do with some woodland property that I inherited. This book did a pretty good job of talking about using woodland property to produce timber for sale. It goes pretty heavily into the forestry side of things. I didn't really need to know how to produce timber for sale but it did give me ideas on how to better manage the trees and thin them out so the best, grow bigger. The one take away that I got from this book is to plan for the future in passing property on to the next generation. I wish my parents had better prepared me.

Very easy to understand and a easy going friendly approach with real average people managing their forests.

Excellent primer for a woodland owner
Offers landowners a excellent primer on woodland management, cowritten from three unique perspectives on forestry - the landowner, the consulting forester, and the logger. Chapters are focused on simple but well documented themes. Interspersed throughout the book are overviews of other landowners, large and small, and how they manage their woodlands. Another commentator wrote that this book was not helpful, and suggests simply hiring a consulting forestry instead. Well read this book to understand what the consulting forestry tells you! And for all other new woodland owners, this book will help them better manage their land.

Great book for the small woodland owner
I went to the Mother Earth News Fair at Seven Springs,PA and listened to the author of this book speak. I was impressed with what I heard so I decided to buy the book. What I like about it is that it presents the views of the landowner, the forester, and the timber man, and how they can work together in creating healthy and productive woodland. It is very informative but yet not overly technical. It would be a great addition to the home library.

Great Resource!
We live in rural Maine and own a small parcel of 10 acres but want to thin out the trees that are not doing well and provide a better environment for the larger trees. We are surrounded by woodsmen and forresters and now feel we are more able to do some of our land planning on our own.

Excellent book
Excellent book. It's not meant for specifics, as every property is different, but it really provides you a basic background in ecology, finances, and dendrology. It really helps get the gears of land management working in your brain. This book is geared to the upper Midwest, especially Wisconsin woodlands.

Great book for everyday people interested in forest and wildlife management.
One of my two favorite books on wildlife management. This book focuses on the forest part of the equation. Tom Indrebo has an excellent book on the animal side of things. Both great resources for someone that want to improve habitat and interact with their property to help it be as alive and well as possible.

Exactly what you need.
A really well written, no nonsense book, worth adding to any landowner's library... if you have 2 acres to 20 sections.
