Most educated and entertaining author on GEOLOGY!
What an amazing book! Dan really does an awesome job going into incredible detail of what you need to look for! One thing that I wish the author was better at, I wish he was as good at communicating and answering questions his customers would have. So as long as your willing to just enjoy his amazing books without being able to ever reach out to him, then you can't go wrong. His books really are the "Bees Knees" as far as Geology and prospecting are concerned. I would have given him a 5 star recommendation if he was willing to communicate with his fans/customers.

a good basic overview of Wyoming's interesting rocks
it is a testament to Dan Hausel's generosity that I felt a tiny bit underwhelmed when this book arrived. After all, he makes so much information publicly available by following his blogs and newsletter that I almost expected a 1000 page gem miner's holy grail to arrive at my door. So my first reaction was to think "wow, this book is smaller than I imagined". But inside those pages there's a lot of information about the various minerals that can be found within the state. There is a general geology discussion and also a section with minerals and their properties. In each mineral discussion, there is a section noting localities within the state where the mineral has been found. I felt that the wealth of scientific info was more rewarding than the localities info, which surprised me, having expected maps and "drive here" notes. It is not that kind of book, catering more to the geology aficionado than the prospector looking for a sure thing without doing any research. Clearly self published - there is reference throughout the book to a "yomingite" which appears to be a placeholder for other names, but if you're willing to take the time to research a little further beyond the pages, this book contains a number of good leads and is well worth a read. I will be taking this with me on a trip to Wyoming this summer, and hope it will be useful in discovering nice specimens.EDIT: update... this is a book of many layers! I've read it several times now, and it continues to offer additional insight at each reading, so I am upgrading my rating from 4 stars to 5. Maybe you will get all the info straight out of the box if you are familiar with geology - I needed study in the language of geologic terms and the minerals, which are both covered well. From there, with some work and the leads described, you can find all sorts of interesting stuff.

A great reference book
A great reference book. If you don't have a lot of geological knowledge, it's still good. Be aware there's really no 'directions' for collecting localities really in it. But IMO it's a must for when you do go.Do your research for collecting, buy topomaps, find your own localities, and take this book along.I am experienced in doing this on the fly in the state bcs I spent some time doing this in college and on my own camping etc.Great resource and Dan KNOWS HIS STUFF.

Lots of info
I'm a relatively new rockhound, going to Wyoming for the first time. Although this book has a lot of info on geology and other technical topics, I found it very interesting. Hausel gives great information on where to look and why the specific gems or minerals are there. I can't wait to go hunting (which is much preferable to me than "X marks the spot."I'll give an update when I'm back.
