Q: How many pounds of sand do you need per bag?

I used 1 50lb bag of play sand. I put the sand into quart size ziploc bags. 3 quart bags full of sand per sandbag.

Q: Will the velcro strap fit around a square pole - 1.5" each side/6" total circumference?

Our bags arrived with very short Velcro straps that I think will be too short for our thicker poles. More like 2 inches for each strap

Q: Can these be uaed with the sportsbrella canopy umbrella?

If the canopy poles are lagers 2 inches in diameter they might not work under 2” yes

Q: How much weight does each individual bag create (with sand or stones, approx.)? A show required "40lb weights" and I assume that meant per leg.

I filled mine with white crushed stone used for landscaping. I did not weigh the bags, but they were about 40 lbs each. Filling the bags with sand should result in a heavier bag. Some reviewers reported leaks with sand, so you may want to line the bags with a trash bag before filling them. At the end of my event, I emptied the crushed stone into five-gallon buckets and stored the weight bags with the tent sides.
