Planet Bike ALX Aluminum Fender, 700c x 55mm, Fits Up to 45mm Tires

This set of Planet Bike ALX 700 x 55mm aluminum fenders replaces a set of Planet Bike Cascadia 700 x 45mm plastic fenders. The plastic fenders cracked on a cold winter day after my bike fell over, accidentally. The aluminum fenders won't crack in the cold. They are also wider, so I can ride on 38mm - 45mm tires. They are heavier than than the plastic fenders but I accept the trade-off in sturdiness and versatility.Both the plastic and aluminum Planet Bike fenders mounted on my touring bike, perfectly, without modifications, except for adjusting the stays for proper tire clearance.Regarding stay adjustments, the Planet Bike adjustment screws are located near the fender blades, not in the center of the stay or near the frame. I prefer this design, plus Planet Bike's stay adjustment mechanism, to the designs and mechanisms of SKS, Bontrager, and Portland Design Works fenders.For my REI ADV 2.1 touring bike, the Planet Bike ALX 700 x 55mm aluminum fenders are the best.

Really tight clearance for a 700x44c vittoria mezcal . I would not use these fenders with anything more than a 40c tire Manufacturer needs to supply a flathead bolt to attach the bottom of the rear fender to the chain stay; supplied #5 bolt head makes it a tight fit.Also, the supplied clamp that holds the rear fender to the seat stay is not useful when the seat stay has a socket at the bottom and not on the side. Seems the only way would be to drill a hole in the fender so that it can be attached to the seat stay.Pricey for the issues.

I like metal fenders, but this set has the stays attached to the fenders from inside similar to plastic fenders, instead of outside like using U-shaped stays. I don't think they would function well in directing water flow when it is raining. I would either go with sturdier metal fenders with U-shaped stays or save money and buy plastic fenders.
